Jewelcrafting Guide, part 2

Okay, so here's part 2 of my jewelcrafting guide. First of all, let me say this: Jewelcrafting lets you cut gems, and make jewelry. I will be focusing on the gems, because it is the best way to make money from the profession.

Pretty simple rules for Jewelcrafting. First, get to 350+ as soon as possible. (Search my blog, I linked to a good guide some time ago. Or Google it.) Once you are at 350, the fun begins. But first, I have bad news: trained cuts and vendor recipe cuts don't sell for a huge deal. Sure, they sell, and you don't have anything else to do with your raw gems, except for sell uncut ones to other jewelcrafters. So, you can make some money by selling those unremarkable gems.

Now, the REAL Jewelcrafting moneymaker comes from cutting gems from dropped recipes. Unfortunately, that means you have to be lucky enough to get one, or have the stomach to buy one. These things can cost from 200 to 500 gold, depending on the recipe. Now, unlike some professions that have lots of cooldowns, in Jewelcrafting only cutting a Meta gem causes a cooldown, and it's only for one hour, and doesn't keep you from cutting non-Meta gems. So, once you get a good recipe (or recipes), you'll be able to buy an uncut blue gem or purple gem, cut it, and resell it at quite a nice profit. Try that with alchemy transmutes!

Jewelcrafting is fairly cheap to level up, but yes, it does require some investment in the end. It takes money to make money, people! But any time someone upgrades their gear with something with sockets (which is most good gear), they need new gems for it. There is ALWAYS a market for good gems, and if you bite the bullet and buy/find a great recipe, you'll rake it in.

Now, which recipes? First of all, in the course of your adventuring in Outlands, you're going to get rep with various factions, and some of them sell recipes! Here are a few to watch for.

Design: Insightful Earthstorm Diamond (Sha'tar Friendly)
Design: Blood of Amber (Sha'tar Revered)
Design: Falling Star (Lower City Revered)

These are all bind on pickup. So, you can make them for yourself, but not to sell. Still, it's nice to have a gem or two hardly anyone ever sees!

Quick primer on gems. Which color gems can have which stats:

Red: strength, agility, +damage and healing, +healing, attack power, dodge, parry
Blue: stamina, spirit, mana per 5, spell penetration
Yellow: intellect, hit, crit, spell crit, defense, resilience, spell hit

Now that we have that established. The most common gems you'll be cutting will be blue quality gems. The different types of raw, uncut blue gems are:

Noble Topaz (orange)
Dawnstone (yellow)
Living ruby (red)
Star of Elune (blue)
Nightseye (purple)
Talasite (green)

Keep in mind, a green quality RAW gem can be cut into a blue quality CUT gem! But they generally have a higher quality counterpart, which is cut from a blue quality raw gem.

You can also craft meta gems from Earthstorm Diamonds and Skyfire Diamonds, which are made by Alchemists. But these are expensive to make, and not as efficient or as easily sold as the blue ones, in my opinion.

Now, market value will vary some, but some gems are clearly useful for many classes, and so are worth more. General rule of thumb seems to be gems with multiple stat bonuses are better than ones that focus on a single stat (with the exception stamina). I've decided to turn that into a third post, due out soon. Really, the problem is that with all the different classes, builds, and gear sets, almost EVERY gem has a place, and a certain degree of demand. But I will try to go over the most commonly bought ones.

Jewelcrafting Guide, part 1

This is part one of a guide about how to make money using Jewelcrafting. I'm going to copy a bit from a previous post I made!

First of all, the most straightforward way to make money with Jewelcrafting is to prospect ore and sell what you get. Following is a list with the necessary skill levels:

Adamantite Ore - 325 Skill
Fel Iron Ore - 275 Skill
Thorium Ore - 250 Skill
Mithril Ore - 175 Skill
Iron Ore - 125 Skill
Tin Ore - 50 Skill
Copper Ore - 1 Skill

If you're a miner, save the high-end ore you mine. If you need to, buy it from the Auction House. Once your Jewelcrafting his 275, you can prospect Fel Iron Ore, and once it hits 315, you can prospect Adamantite Ore. Prospecting means you use the ore in order to look for gems in it. Gem drop rates have gotten a boost lately, which is nice, though it knocked prices down. The process is simple: get ore, prospect gems, hope for a blue, sell uncut gems. Even if you have to buy the ore, you might be able to easily make up the profit by selling the gems. Check your Auction House prices on gems before you do this! If they're really low, you might want to wait for the market to go back up.

Really, this is a fairly straightforward thing, but it requires some work from you. Focus on prospecting ore that has the best chance to yield whatever gems (especially blue) are selling the best. On my server, that tends to be Noble Topaz (about 50g a pop, uncut), but it will probably vary.

Conceivably, if the prices are right, you could turn a profit from simply buying a stack of 20 ore, prospecting the entire stack, and selling what you get. Experiment!

My next post will focus on cutting gems, and which are the most profitable.

Miners Trick with Felsteel

Here's a quick little trick I have found decent success with as a miner. Get some Fel Iron from Helfire Peninsula - it's all over. Make Fel Iron Bars. Now, hit the AH and look for Eternium Bars. It takes 2 Eternium and 3 Fel Iron bars (4 Eternium ore and 6 Fel Iron ore) to make a Felsteel Bar. I usually find 2 Eternium bars for 3-4 gold. So, I pay the 3-4 gold for it, smelt a bar of Felsteel, and turn around and sell that for 12-15 gold! It's a quick trick, very easy to do, and as long as you aren't overpaying for the Eternium, it's always a profit.

Mining in Nagrand

One of my friends was, at one time, a very dedicated WoW player. He could put so much time into it that it baffled me, and still does. I can only go for maybe 2 hours of play at a time, and usually only once a day! My friends, through a combination of question at 70 and mining, made the 5000 gold for his epic mount in about 3 weeks.

Now, I've already done a post about questing at 70. If you've got the stomach for it, grind as much as possible. That will leave you with tons of quests to do at 70, and you'll get gold for each. I may, if I can stand it, do that with my shadow priest, once I get there. I'll definitely keep track, though, and post the results if I do.

Now, mining. The best place to mine in Outlands is Nagrand. Almost all the nodes are adamantite, or rich adamantite deposits. I did about 30 minutes there just now, and got got 27 ore, 20 motes of earth, and 4 eternium ore. All told, that's about 70 gold. I know, 70 gold an hour isn't huge, but it's RELIABLE. I'm going to put this money to use in the Auction House, which I still think is the best way to turn a little money into a lot. I'm going to start keeping a log of what I do with a starting amount of 70 gold or so, rather like Derek's Gold Project X. It'll be an interesting way to show Auction House tactics, and it'll force me to not be lazy and abandon it! Thoughts?

Reselling With a Twist

I've been investigating one of the suggestions left to me in a comment: find items that can be bought, re-worked into something else, then sold for a profit.

The results are going to disappoint you. Given the variable pricing of different servers, different factions, even different days, prices are just too variable to say: "Here are some items that can be bought low and crafted and resold, always."

Really, the best way to approach this kind of thing is on an individual level. I can say, with some authority, that there are very few instances where you will be able to reliably make a big profit by buying materials and crafting them into new items to sell for profit. There are some notable exceptions, aside from just hoping someone stupidly sells something for too low:

Rare Crafting Recipes. Yes, those blue and purple schematics, plans and patterns that you see selling for hundreds of gold. If you're really going to make it work, you need a rare crafting item. Everyone else can make the vendor recipes, and do, so even if you do find the materials for a good deal, the new item will be worth very little. Actually, it's often the case that the new item is worth LESS than the materials, because demand for raw materials tends to be higher than for individual items.

Okay, so let's say you have one of those rare patters, either bought (easiest), or found (pain in the #!@%$). I hope you did some research on what the item requires to be made, because you can get screwed here with a final product worth less than the materials. A good example that I am familiar with is shield spike recipes - these recipes sell for a lot. I almost never see the spikes themselves for sale, simply because so few people bother to farm or buy the recipe. The same holds true for other professions. If you see a recipe for sale, and notice that you rarely see that ITEM for sale, consider the market wide open. It does take some individual research, and you'll be out a chunk of change if you buy the recipe, but over time you stand to make it back and then some!

Really quickly, here are some little deals to keep an eye out for:

Motes. Sometimes you can buy 10 motes for less than the 1 primal.
Unworked Cloth, Ore: Sometimes you can find the raw form, work it into a bolt of cloth, fel iron, whatever, and sell it for a profit.
Uncombined enchanting items: Anything that can be used individually, or turned into something else when you get 3 of them, 10 of them, etc.
Alchemy ingredients to turn into potions

It's a small list, and I'm sorry for that. If you want me to add stuff, leave a comment and I'll add it. Unfortunately, if it were easy to turn a big profit from buying-crafting-reselling, the market would be flooded with those items, and so balance itself out.

The Daily Quests

Okay, here we go, time for me to go over daily quests. If you don't know why they are good, here is why: there are about 15 daily quests over all of the factions, and they give an average of 10g or so per. However, you can only do 10 per day, so plan accordingly! This is how people usually get the 5,000 they need to get their flying mount! Anyway, here we go!

Netherwing Quests
First of all, you need to be Neutral with Netherwing to begin the daily quests. If you aren't neutral yet, follow this link to the WoWHead list of the quest chain, with lots of helpful comments! Netherwing is the faction that allows you to get a Netherdrake at the end of the long, long road.

Once you are Neutral (9 quests later), and have some sort of flying mount, you can do the dailies. Here they are, with links to WoWHead for details. I will include gold approximates, but if you want the real skinny on them, follow the links.

Netherwing Crystals : 12g, 250 rep
A Slow Death : 12g, 250 rep
The Not-So-Friendly Skies : 12g 250 rep

When you get to Friendly, more become available.
Picking Up the Pieces : 18g, 350 rep
Dragons are the Least of our Problems : 12g, 350 rep
Booterang: A Cure For The Common Worthless Peon : 12g, 350 rep

At Honored you can begin to do one more.
Disrupting the Twilight Portal : 12g, 500 rep

Two more become available at Revered.
The Deadliest Trap Ever Laid (Scryers) : 12g, 500 rep
The Deadliest Trap Ever Laid (Aldor) : 12g, 500 rep

Skyguard Quests
There are two Skyguard quest hubs, one north of Skettis in Blackwind Landing, and Skyguard Outpost, in Blade's Edge Mountains. You need to do do these prereqs before you can do dailies. Skyguard is the faction that allows you to get a Nether Ray at Exalted.

Threat from Above : 250 rep
To Skettis! : 10 rep

Now, the dailies.
Fires Over Skettis : 12g, 350 rep
Escape From Skettis : 12g, 350 rep

Ogri'la Quests
To do the Blade's Edge Mountains quests, you need to unlock the Ogri'la quest chain. The best 2 Ogri'la dailies also give rep for Skyguard, which is handy!

Work, work, work

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the slow posting schedule lately. This is the time of the quarter when I tend to get really quite busy! Also, it's taking more and more time to find, research, and add decent tips. Anyway, the reason for the post! I will be delaying until Friday, unfortunately. I'm not going to be home much these next two days. I've tried to never put more than 4 days between posts, but Friday will break that tradition, unfortunately. Just wanted to let you all know!

Fishing for Motes of Water

Tired of grinding water elementals? Have a high fishing skill you never use?

Well, let's be honest. Grinding water elementals is probably the most efficient way to get motes of water. Fishing, great skill though it is, isn't one many people keep up to snuff in Outlands. However, aside from being able to fish for then cook some very nice +stat food, you can fish for motes of water, if you'd like a change of pace!

Fishing spots work a bit differently from other nodes. The best place to fish for motes of water is in Nagrand, in the 3 MAIN lakes (the 3 that almost touch, biggest on the map, hard to miss). Across all 3 exist about 30 pools of water (bluefish school, mudfish school, or pure water). When you fish one, it immediately respawns at another location, as one of the 3 types I listed.

Now, you want to look for the Pure Water, though you need to fish ALL of them you see, in hopes that when the spot respawns elsewhere, it will be pure water. There's about a 90% chance you'll get a mote of water from it. If you get 4 or 5 motes per pool at maybe 8 pools an hour, that's somewhere between 2.5 and 4 primal water per hour, roughly. The good thing is that fishing is somewhat hard to get to the level needed (about 450, preferably), and pretty annoying to boot, so your competition should be minimal!

New Chest Farming for Rogues

So, Blizz fixed the old Mechanar chest farming exploit, which flooded the market with world blues, and generally contributed to a large drop in price for many items. Well, someone has already figured out a new one for Manatombs, if you have a decently geared 70 rogue.

Ragesteel Shoulders

Okay, here's one that's time based, but it works pretty well for now!

Everyone is all abuzz with the new recipes out in the 2.2 patch. One of the nicer ones if the addition of Ragesteel Shoulders to the Ragesteel set for warriors. The shoulders are probably the nicest part of the set, and at the moment, not many people have the plans for them. (Plans drop from the Enraged Air elementals in Shadowmoon). The materials to make them are pretty ordinary, except for Scroll of Strength V, which you need 2 of.

Ordinarily, that wouldn't mean anything. You can't buy them, and pretty much need to rely on drops for them. Now that they have a part in a nice recipe, prices have skyrocketed, especially because buying them on the AH is the only way to reliably and easily find them. Or is it? If you haven't finished up Zangamarsh, you might be in luck! Unfinished Business for the Alliance, or A Job Undone for the Horde, has FIVE of these babies as one of the optional quest rewards! So if you haven't done it, go do it! Put those scrolls on the Auction House, and underbid the competition by a fair amount. No matter what you sell them for, it's pure profit.

PPP: Flask of Chromatic Wonder

Time for another PPP installment, that is a "Particularly Profitable Pattern"!

New patch (2.3), hurray! New content! I haven't done a post about pattern reselling in awhile, so here we go. The Flask of Chromatic Wonder! Probably one of the coolest sounding recipes ever. Quite useful, too. It is sold by Apprentice Darius, the Karazan vendor in Deadwind Pass. It also requires Honored with the Violet Eye to buy it. But, it doesn't bind, and a lot of people have no idea where it comes from yet! So, reselling it should work fine, especially to Alchemists who aren't running Karazan, and have no way of getting it.

Same routine as ever, folks. Buy some (seems like they are unlimited supply?), resell them to other players. This should work well, until everyone finally figures out where they come from. But even when they do, only people who run Kara will be able to buy it! So, expect these to sell decently for some time yet, but the best time would be right now.

AoE Farming in Silithus

A lot of people look at grinding for gold in Wacraft with faulty logic. Everyone is so gaga over Outlands that they never leave, or consider there might be places just as good in Azeroth! Well, they are partially correct. For sheer value of items, level of mobs, etc, Outlands is king. However, there are some great places in Azeroth where a level 70 can grind extremely quickly and efficiently, which makes up for the lower value of the mobs.

Case in point, Twilight Avengers and Twilight Geolords in Silithus. This is a great place, especially for Mages who can AoE grind effectively. Check the links above for the locations of these mobs -- the good thing about them is they are very densely populated, very weak (for a level 70 mage), and are HUMANOID. So, they drop silver, frequently drop cloth, and the traditional greens or maybe world BoE blue. Round them up, knock them down. Runecloth, which is what they drop, still sells very well on my server, and probably yours. (Used mainly for bandages and pre BC recipes). You can grind here safely, and with little fear from being ganked by another level 70 player, so enjoy the change of scenery!

Dirty, Dirty Trick

I was debating with myself if I should even post this Auction House trick. It takes advantage of the competition, which is fine. It has a decent success rate, also fine. However, it is very, very dishonest, and generally pretty bad form. I've only done this once, and I felt really bad about it, so I don't do it anymore. Unfortunately, it IS somewhat amusing on an immature, sneaky level, and it's an example of out-of-the-box thinking. So, here we go.

I made a post about an Auction House tactic where you find an undervalued item on the AH, and then post it in /trade for a normal sell value, or higher. The hope is that someone will offer to buy it without checking the Auction House to find the actual price. When you see people selling a plethora of blue items at one time and wonder where they got them, they either bought them and are now trying to sell them, or they're using this trick. Most of the time, people are smart enough to not fall for this. BUT: a lot of people still try to make this work, and that is what we're going to take advantage of.

Make 2 characters and jog their weak butts to an Auction House. Take a decent blue item, and list it on the Auction House for, oh, 25 or 30 gold higher than it should go for. Stay with me, I'm not crazy. Now, log on to your other toon. Get in /trade, and say something like "want to buy ****", whatever the item is, for even HIGHER than what it was listed for. Now, if you're lucky, someone will try to pull a fast one with the first trick I listed: they'll hit the AH, see it for sale for less than what you're buying it for, buy it, and try to resell it to you for your price. (It must be the ONLY listing of the item, or the person will just buy the one that is listed for the real price instead of yours!). Here's the dishonest part: once they buy that item (the one you posted on the other character), just log off, say you don't need it now, whatever. Now you've sold that item for way over its value.

Here's an example. Get Ced's Carver on one toon. It sells for, oh, 50 gold on my server. So, I could list it for 80 gold or so. Then I'd get on another character and say in /trade "WTB Ced's Carver, 100g". The victim checks the AH, sees it for 80, buys it, and tries to sell it to me, at which point I disappear. Voila, Ced's Carver sold for 30 gold over value. Of course, this wouldn't work with Ced's Carver, because EVERYONE is trying to sell one (mostly because of Rogue treasure chest farming). Try to do this with a more rare blue that people don't see frequently.

I do NOT recommend using this beyond maybe once to see that it does work. I do encourage this sort of unconventional thinking, though! Be creative and you can stumble upon some trick no one has thought of, and ruthlessly exploit it!

Auctioneer Advanced

As if Auctioneer 4 wasn't good enough, the brilliant folks of Norganna have released a NEW addon: Auctioneer Advanced. Don't be deceived by the name - it isn't an update for Auctioneer, it's a completely separate addon. As the Auctioneer Advanced info page points out, there is one thing you need to understand about this new addon:

Your Auctioneer data will NOT be converted. Auctioneer Advanced uses a different database, and does not share data with Auctioneer. However, you can run it alongside Auctioneer with no trouble until you build up Auctioneer Advanced's database.

So, when you load it and find you have no price data... sorry. No way around it! Enjoy the chance to build up a new set of data from the most current prices.

Speaking of price data. Scanning the Auction House is not the only way to gather data for Auctioneer Advanced. Every time you search an item, whatever the Auction House returns to you is added to your data. This is nice, especially if you want to keep current on certain things, but don't want to take 10 minutes to scan. Also, there will no longer be the moment of lag at the end of a scan, before the sound plays. Hurray!

Also, the entire setup can now be done through a GUI: no more confusing slash commands! More on this later, in depth.

Appraiser! A new feature in Auctioneer Advanced that carriers an Auctioneer feature to its logical conclusion. Remember the button you checked in Auctioneer to remember your pricing? Well, Auctioneer Advanced does that automatically, for EVERY item you post. So the next time you list it, you can see what you sold it for last time, search the Auction House (and record new data for that item), and adjust your sell price accordingly.

Let's break it down into sections: first thing, the main auctioneer window. Before, you had to do a scan, then search through it according to PCT less, bid %, etc. Now, some of this info is built into the main Auctioneer window!

A lot of this is familiar territory.

On the far left of the results, we have the number of items in the stack.

Next the item name, followed by the minimum level you need to use it (if any).

To the right of that, we have "iLvl", a new feature. This is the "item level", which from what I understand is the estimated level requirement an item would have if those stats were found on a green.

Next is "left", which is how much time is left on the Auction, followed by the name of who is selling it.

Next is obviously the price. Bid price on top, buyout (if there is one), listed beneath it.

Lastly, we have the "PCT" column, which means "percent". Basically, it is how much the item is listed for compared to how much it is sellable for, according to your data. As I only have a couple scans worth, Auctioneer Advanced is seeing these items for the first time, hence the "100%". They are being listed at exactly the same price as my data reflects, and my data contains only that price. The more data you have, the more reliable this value becomes.

Note, there is no 'scan' button! You can scan by typing "/auc scan", or press the little "play" button on the top frame.

Now, let's look at our new "Appraiser" tab, which is where you will do all your selling. This where things start to get different, and rather cool.

On the far left is your item selection window. It shows a list of all your sellable items! Simply click on it in this window, and the info for it will pop up on the right-hand window. Now you don't need to search through your bags, looking for the correct icon! You can search by name; very handy.

Under where it displays the name of the item are some sliders. The first is the stack slider. Here is where you can choose how many items per stack you want to sell.

The slider beneath is for how many stacks you want to sell at the size you chose above. Look at the image I have: the first slider says "stack size: 5", meaning I want to sell in stacks of 5. Below, the slider says "number: 2 stacks = 10". Meaning, I will list 2 stacks of 5, for a total of 10. When I click to post the auction, it post 2 stacks of 5 automatically! Neat, huh? You can also set it to automatically list as many full stacks as you have items for, but moving the slider one click from the far right. All the way to the right will list every full stack you can, and whatever is left after that as a smaller stack.

On the bottom right, we have the bid price per item and buy price per item fields. This is just where you put in your bid price and buyout price. Auctioneer Advance will do this for you once you have data for it, just like Auctioneer. "Per item" simply means if you're selling a stack, how much each one in the stack goes for.

Now, on the bottom left we have the "pricing model to use" dropdown menu. Here's where it can get confusing. I haven't figured out the details of them all, but here's what they mean as I understand it, in order from top of the menu to the bottom:

Market Value: This is the one we are used to. Lists the price Auctioneer Advanced thinks it can be sold for, based on previous auctions it has seen.

Stats: Vendor Markup: If Auctioneer Advanced hasn't seen an item before, it will list it at 3x what a vendor would buy it for (as vendors are rip-off artists).

Fixed Price allows you to specify what exactly you want to sell for.

The other options are a bit more cryptic. As Auctioneer Advanced is new, there is not full documentation. I'll finish the list when I'm comfortable that I can explain them accurately. In general, use "stddev" or Market when selling.

The very bottom window shows other listings of the item you have just put up (according to your last scan, that is.)

I think that's enough for one post, don't you? That should get you comfortable with how to use it. Next post will cover the configure menu in depth, which I didn't touch here, for those of you who must tweak and tweak and tweak until everything is perfect!

AoE Grinding in Shadowmoon Valley

Whoa, sorry for the long time between posts! The days just got away from me!

Here's a very nice spot for a level 70 mage to AoE grind and make some serious gold! Head to Shadowmoon Valley and go to the Ruins of Karabor. You're looking for Demon Hunter Supplicants, and they won't be hard to find because there are 15 or 20 of them, all close together, all level 70. Don't be alarmed! Blizzard, thankfully, has them training with each other, so they aren't all at full health. Being the sneaky, opportunistic type that we are, we will take advantage of this!

These mobs are mainly melee fighters, so if you're good at kiting with AoE, you'll have dished out some serious damage before they even get to you. I know they are all level 70, but if you know how to AoE properly, you should be alright. One thing to remember is that they respawn very quickly. Yeah, that's pretty great in terms of little downtime, but be careful they don't spawn on you while you loot the huge pile of bodies. Try to pull them a little bit away from where you found them, just to be safe.

Bits of silver from each mob, decent amounts of greens, and lots of Scryer rep items are to be had! Unless another mage is AoE grinding, there's really no reason for anyone to be here other than for doing quests, so competition should be minimal. Get to it!

Grinding Advice for Rogues

Rogues, there are only 2 things to consider when looking for a good grinding spot: Are the mobs wearing cloth, and are they melee or casters? For maximum efficiency, they must be cloth wearers. You'll go through them much more quickly than beasts or armored mobs. If they are melee, fight a few to find out what kind of damage they do to you, and judge if it's worth it. If they are casters, well, you've got it made. Low health, squishy armor, and casts you can interrupt, what more could you ask for?

Now, there are tons of spots in the world to grind mobs, but most people don't need to grind until 70, as you're better off questing before then. So, I will offer my 2 favorite spots with squishtastic mobs, and good rewards. If anyone would like me to add spots for other level ranges, leave a comment and I will!

Deadwind Pass: The ogres in Deadwind (Deadwind Brutes, Deadwind Maulers and Deadwind Ogre Mages) are actually fairly weak. As a Rogue, you should just breeze through them. They drop lots of Runecloth, and of course, some silver and copper. The birds that fly around are weak in hitpoints/armor, but do decent damage and have a DoT they constantly use. Unless you're combat specced, I'd avoid them, as being dotted will ruin an ambushing Rogue's efficiency.

The Legion Hold, Shadowmoon Valley: If you haven't guessed, this is one of my favorite places ever to grind. Look for Wrathwalkers, as they are all over the place. They drop Netherweave by the truckload, also rep items you can sell/turn in. At the top of Legion Hold, where the infernals are, you will find Shadow Council Warlocks. These mobs are just too easy, and also drops tons of cloth and good greens. Low hitpoints, and all they do is cast Shadow Bolt. If you're 70, they will likely only get through one cast before dying, which you will interrupt anyway. VERY little downtime here, folks. The respawn rate seems to vary, but even with 3 people here at once, you will never have to wait for a target. The Warlocks in particular are a nice grind, as they have the chance to drop Recipe: Fel Strength Elixer, if you're an Alchemist.

Remember Rogues, bring bandages, bring lots of food, and bring empty bags. Enjoy the grind!

Farming Felcloth in Diremaul

I've said it before: the best thing about the expansion is that some items that were intended to be hard to get are now easy to get, and just as useful (expensive) as ever, or even more!

So, here we apply that to Felcloth, which is used in high level Tailoring and Leatherworking recipes. It tends to be very hard to farm, dropping rarely off of Satyr type mobs. However,
the Wildspawn Satyrs inside of Dire Maul enjoy a 5% drop rate, which is rather decent. At level 70, you should have no problem tearing these guys apart, as they are only 54-55 elites. So, check out the Felcloth prices on your server. If it's worth it, this spot is my recommended grind spot! Anywhere else, and you risk interruptions, PKing, etc etc.

I know, wussy post. Busy with school. Don't lose faith!

Disenchanting Halaa Vendor Items

Halaa is a rather annoying place to get into. In my experience, any time you want to get into it, it will be in the other faction's control. However, if you can get into it, and you're an enchanter, here's something worth your time.

The blade merchant for each faction (Aldraan for Alliance, Coreiel for Horde). They sell a limited quantity (3) green throwing item, the Avenging Blades or the Sharp Cookie, for Alliance and Horde respectively. Aside from being very decent green items for Rogues or other DPS melee classes, they disenchant into items worth rather more than the cost of buying them (2g21s). Disenchant them into Arcane Dust or Greater Planar Essences, and occasionally a Large Prismatic Shard!

This won't make you rich, folks, but it's a good way to level up Enchanting, and a good way to turn a quick profit if you're in Nagraand.

Enchantrix

Enchantrix is one of the many great Norganna addons available (same maker as Auctioneer!). Currently, it is in beta stages, and is not part of the Auctioneer pack, as it was in the past. When Burning Crusade was released, Blizzard made some changes to some key formulas for determing what an item will disenchant into, and so Enchantrix needs something of an overhaul. It can be downloaded as a fairly stable BETA standalone from this page.

The idea behind Enchantrix is simple, and much like Auctioneer, which you will need in order to use this as it is intended. Through many scans, Auctioneer gatherers a database of prices on all items it sees on the Auction House. That includes all of the enchanting materials. What Enchantrix does is check its database for what an item can disenchant into, at what % chance, and use Auctioneer data to turn out an estimated gold value of the materials you get for disenchanting it. The goal is that you find an item for sale for sale that can be disenchanted into materials worth MORE than the item.

First thing's first. Download Enchantrix, unzip to your Addon folder. Now, we need to do one thing before getting started. Go to your Enchantrix folder in your WoW directory, and open "EnxConstants.lua" with Wordpad. Look for the table labeled "const.StaticPrices". This is where Enchantrix gets the info on how much the Enchanting materials are worth. Change these to reflect the prices on your server to make Enchantrix more accurate. Please not that in the file, the prices are listed in terms of COPPER. 100 copper to 1 silver, 10,000 copper to 1 gold. Keep this in mind when fixing prices. If you want to change the price for a Large Brilliant Shard to 10 gold, that is 100,000 copper.

Make sure you enable it at the character select screen, and log in to your banker!

Enchantrix should load automatically. Just in case, type in "/enchantrix on". This makes sure that it will display the information on the item tooltip (mixed in with the Auctioneer data). Now, type" /enchantrix show" to bring up a nice GUI to mess with your settings. Generally, these are find how they are. If you change them and restrict the results you get from your searches, you're only hurting yourself. In the end, it's YOU, not Enchantrix who will determine if something is a good purchase. The program can't do everything. :p

Let's make some sense of what you're seeing. When you mouseover a disenchantable item, you will see something like this:

Obviously, the highlighting is my own. What do these values mean to you? Well, from the top

99% Small Prismatic Shard x 1.0 -- There is a 99% chance to get 1 Small Prismatic Shard. (If a 2.5 or something comes up, no you won't get 2.5. You could get 1, 2 or 3 of them)
1% Void Crystal x 1.0 -- There is a 1% chance to get 1 Void Crystal.
Disenchanting requires skill 225 -- Self explanatory. You need 225 skill to disenchant it.
Disenchant value (HSP) -- This is the "highest sellable price", or an optimistic estimate of what Auctioneer thinks you can sell it for, based on information from past scans.
Disenchant value (median) -- This is the value based on the average selling price in all historical auctions. It's usually the reliable one, as it's based on your ever-updated Auctioneer data.
Disenchant Value (baseline) -- This is the value of the pieces as determined by a website like Allakazam or Thottbot. As those tend to derived from multiple servers, this may or may not be accurate on your own server. My advice is to ignore this value, unless you fixed the lua file as I explained above.

That sums up the basics of it. Simply check the Median value and see if the pieces are worth more than the item you are buying. HOWEVER. Some annoying players will try to list their materials at far, far more than they are worth. If you scan these, it will screw up your values. Check directly what materials are worth before putting them up for auction, as the results from Enchantrix can be inaccurate.

So, how do you make money with this? Here are the slash commands you need to know to search your Auctioneer data. Yes, these 2 are all you really need to know.

"/enchantrix bidbroker " -- Same as Auctioneer. So, "/enchantrix bidbroker 50" will return items that can be sold for AT LEAST 50 silver. If you put it 500, it would be the ones that sell for at least 500 silver, or 5 gold, so always think in terms of silver.
"/enchantrix percentless " -- This will return items that have a buyout a certain % LESS than the disenchanted pieces are worth. "/enchantrix percentless 50" would return only items that have a buyout 50% less than the disenchanted materials could be sold for. Higher values yield higher profit results, but fewer of them

Being successful with Enchantrix requires some patience, and a willingness to take risk. After all, you might buy that item hoping to get a Nether Essence, but against all odds, you get only a small radiant shard. It does happen, and it WILL happen. Of course, it can happen in reverse, too! If you want to play it safe, only stick to items that can be disenchanted into ONE thing. That way you know what you'll be getting. Bear in mind, this will somewhat restrict your buying options.

Also keep in mind, if something is listed at a high profit, say 20 gold, and there is a 10% chance of a Nether Essence, or something else very valuable, but a 90% chance of worthless junk, that 10% is inflating Enchantrix's estimation of the items value. Don't let Enchantrix do all the work! If you don't understand stuff like this, and just buy everything listed as profit, Enchantrix (like Auctioneer) will lose you money.

As one of my readers pointed out in the comments, Enchantrix isn't a huge Auction House money spinner. Like I said (also in comments!) it is almost always more profitable to sell an item than disenchant and sell the parts. But yes, sherretz has a good point in that perhaps the best use of Enchantrix is on random greens you pick up Thanks, sherretz, and for the number error too!

And I can't believe I forgot to point this out. If you're level 70, hit Scarlet Monastery or ZF, or Uldaman or another instance. Those BoE blues the bosses drop have decent odds on disenchanting into decent materials, probably worth more than the item itself. I did a post about Scarlet Monastery like that, if anyone is interested. Same principle works in any instance, but SM is probably the most efficient.

Primal Water and Primal Air for Alchemists

In response to a request, here's some info about primal waters and primal air.

Now, alchemists can transmute water to air, which is nice to have, as air can be somewhat difficult to farm sometimes. On my server, primal air is the most expensive primal of all, and the least available, likely owing to that it has no particularly awesome farming spot (use my search bar if you're interested, I think I covered good farming spots in another post). Also, the recipe to transmute primal water to primal air is indeed a revered reward from the Cenarion Expedition, so a huge amount of people aren't going to be doing it.

What it comes down to is patience. The cooldown on transmuting Primals is a long one, so it isn't as though you'll be making a ton of gold a day by doing it. But, you WILL make gold. Primals are one of the most easily sold items, in my opinion. I always sell mine through the trade channel, and they always sell well, if you undercut the AH by a gold or two. Again, the problem is simply time taken to transmute. If anyone wants to try this, my advice is to grab up multiple Primal Waters at the lowest price you can, and keep them in your bag to transmute whenever you can. When you market them in /trade, be sure to give the option of buying them individually, in case someone doesn't want "10x primal air!".

On a related note, you can also transmute Primal Earth to Primal Water, via a Sporeggar revered recipe. Primal Earth is just dirt cheap, because it's so easy to get. You can make a much bigger profit with this recipe, transmuting Primal Earth to Primal Water (in the neighborhood of 20g profit, on my server).

The Orb of Deception

I think one of the best things about the expansion for World of Warcraft is that at level 70, you can do a lot of things alone that you couldn't do at 60. Thankfully, no one bothers to do some of these things, so if you pull it off, you can make some serious cash.

Enter, the Orb of Deception. It's a trinket that transforms a member of one faction to look like a member of the other faction. I know, it's totally useless! But the "cool" factor, or the "I just have everything else" counts a lot here. These things go for 500 gold, easily. It's a rare find on the Auction House these days.

So how do you get it? Head to the Dire Maul Arena. Keep an eye on you chat window and wait for Skarr the Ubreakable or Razza to yell something: that means they are at the arena (takes a few hours to respawn, so go kill time mining or something while you wait, or farm the instance). Soon as one pops, go and kill it! They have about 10% chance to drop the Orb, but will always drop SOMETHING decent. Azeroth blues sell for TONS more than Outland blues, so you are guaranteed some gold!

If you aren't a caster who can kite, or a hunter, you may want to take a friend. Of course, if you have decent enough gear, burn your cooldowns and take some potions, you'll probably be alright.

Quick Linen at the Defias Windmill

Here's one for the lower level folk out there amid my scant readership.

Westfall is the best place in the game to farm linen. Linen, you say? Who cares about linen? Well, a lot of people care about it, particularly people leveling up tailoring and first aid skills. Linen goes for about a gold a stack, which is good money at lower levels.

The Defias Windmill is on the Northwestern shore of Westfall. It isn't noted on the map, but I have supplied a handy reference here. That isolated block of white dots is the windmill. Now, here's the kicker - the mobs here respawn more or less instantly (Defias Trapper s and Defias Looters. They go down fast, they come back up faster. If Blizzard hasn't fixed this yet (and I don't think they have), they probably never will, so it's a good tip to know. You can farm tons of linen here, and small change in copper because they are humans, and they carry money. And of course the random green drop.

So, there you have it. For the low level trying to get some cash, or the any-level trying to SAVE some by not buying their way through the lower levels of Tailoring and First Aid. Happy farming!

Vanity Sells - Blood Elf Bandit Mask

For those of you who have never seen it, this is the Blood Elf Bandit Mask. Bask in its glory. Yes, it takes up your head slot, and has no stats. But it looks as cool as hell, and that has some definite weight when it comes to pricing! And yes, this is somewhat difficult to get, but not too hard if you know how. This, one of the coolest "vanity items" in the game, sells for maybe 50g or more, depending on the server. I have almost never seen them on the auction house, and I know plenty of players, even high level ones, don't even know they exist! So, yeah, this can sell for lots of gold.

You need to head to Azuremyst Isle and kill the Blood Elf Bandit. Now, here is where it gets tricky. Scope out the map (click the link to go to Thottbot), and you'll see that the bandit pops up in a number of places. They will stay in the general zone they spawn in, but they are STEALTHED. Not that a high-level player will have trouble seeing a stealthed level 7 mob, but still, it makes it harder. And if you kill it, there's only a 10% drop chance on the mask! Rough, I know, but that just drives the price up. Also, the mob respawns a short 2 minutes after being killed, which is nice.

So what do you do? Simply run a route that takes you through all the spawn points (pretty much just a big oval, folks, not too hard). Really, unless there is competition, you should be able to find and kill him every 7 or 8 minutes, so you can probably get 1 mask per hour, more if you're rather lucky.

Now, this is an ALLIANCE zone, so it's more likely to be farmed by Alliance toons. So if you get one, it's worth a shot putting it in the neutral Auction House, because however rare it is for an Alliance to have it, a Horde having it is even rarer! Adjust the price accordingly, and let your Horde friends know it's available. Or, if you're on a non-PVP server, put it up for sale with your Alliance toon, buy it with your Horde, and then relist it on the Horde auction house at a higher price. Ooo, sneaky!

So, next time you have nothing to do, give this a shot. It's a bit unconventional, but hey, some players LIVE for having cool looking characters (especially on RP realms). Happy farming!

May the Grind Be With You - More Aldor Rep

Boy, am I sick of grinding Aldor rep. I've been LIVING at Legion Hold in Shadowmoon Valley for a week, grinding whenever I play. It's contributing well to my flying mount fund, but still, it gets old.

So, today I tried a new spot - the Arklon Ruins, southeast of Area 52 in Netherstorm. Wow! It's actually a great place to grind. The mobs are Artifact Seekers and Felblade Doomguards. Unlike the Legion Hold mobs, who have high-damage spells you need to watch out for, these mobs only auto attack, and weakly. They are quite squishy, and I only had to stop to eat about once per 10 or so kills. Also, they drop Marks of Sargeras at about 30%, which is 5% higher than the mobs at Legion Hold! It doesn't seem like much, but it really is. They also drop Fel Armaments more. In 1 hour of grinding I got 2 greens, 42 Marks, and 4 Fel Armaments! The only downside is that I didn't come out with 100+ Netherweave to sell. :(

So, there you have it. For a speed grind, hit Arklon Ruins. For lots of gold as well as rep items, Legion Hold.

Skinning Quillfang Ravagers in Hellfire

Crystal Infused Leather, aside from sounding very cool, is used in most high level Leatherworking recipes. However, it's kind of a specialty item in terms of where it comes from. It sells anywhere from 10-15g per stack on my server, so it's worth it to grind for it. It's not very hard, either!

Head to Hellfire Peninsula, and grind on Quillfang Ravagers. Kill, skin, rinse, repeat! Hold onto the Fel Scales they may drop, and keep your fingers crossed for greens! This is a somewhat out of the way spot (check the map for location), so don't worry about too much competition!

This isn't fancy: skinning is a straightforward deal! File this info away into your list of good gold grinding spots, or for when you roll a Leatherworker. ;)

Mapwow is a very, very useful tool. Basically, it's like Google Earth, but for World of Warcraft! Even better, you can set it to show the spawn points of any environmental nodes, like herbs, mining nodes, or treasure chests!

With the ability to zoom out, you can find which zones have inherently more of whatever item(s) you are looking for. If you're a rogue, I suggest you begin farming treasure chests in Outlands as soon as you have the ability. You can gather lots of blues or epics with some persistence and luck (or, lacking luck, just lots of persistence). Or if you're a blacksmith, make some keys and go to it! I do recommend that if you're going to go farming for things like this, have at least your epic ground mount. Of course, a flying mount makes everything in Outlands even easier, ESPECIALLY when you can bypass all the mobs and get to where you want to go without hassle!

Alternatively, look up the Cartographer addon in Google, and you will find that it can be set up to modify your maps ingame to show these same spawn points. I have more info about that particular functionality in my post about Cartographer databases!

May the Grind Be With You - Alliance and Horde in Shadowmoon Valley

Okay, everyone, this one is kind of fun. In Shadowmoon Valley, in the Outlands, the Alliance town is "Wildhammer Stronghold", and the Horde town is "Shadowmoon Village". These are two of the main quest hubs in the zone for each faction, and interestingly, you don't even need to leave town to complete one of them!

For the Horde, the quest begins with Chief Apocethary Hildagard, and for the Alliance, Zorus the Judicator.

The quest you are interested in is the second of a chain, the first of which there are no requirements to take, other than speaking to Fantei in Shattrath first. So, find your NPC and knock out the first quest, and accept the second, which for the Horde is Spectrecles, and for the Alliance is Harbingers of Shadowmoon.

This is a typical grind quest, but here's the kicker: It takes place INSIDE a town. The mobs are very easy to kill, level 67-68. They drop lots of Netherweave, and are plentiful and quickly spawning. In short, this is a perfect, safe, lucrative place to grind! And the best part is that you're perfectly safe! So, next time you get ganked at your favorite grind spot, keep in mind that you have a much, much safer option open to you!

Get the Edge in the Auction House

Something few people take into consideration in the Auction House is the ORDER that items are listed in. The major factor in this is what the BID is set to. So, if you're undercutting someone's buyout, and they have a lower starting bid, their item gets listed higher up on someone's search results.

Now, no one is going to buy an item they don't even know is on the Auction House. Every little edge counts, and this one is easy to apply. Before listing something, check to see what your competition is. You'll already be undercutting their buyouts (you'd BETTER be, if you're listing it with competition!), but make sure you undercut their BID price as well. It only needs to be a little bit, and that will ensure that your item gets highest priority in someone's search! Every little bit counts.

Warlocks Need Ghost Mushrooms!

So, everyone always complains how easy it is for a Warlock to get their epic mount. They just quest for it, they don't need to buy it! True enough, but they need a lot of materials to fulfill the quest, and Elixers of Shadow Power, the main ingredient of which happens to be Ghost Mushrooms (3 of them).

Ghost Mushrooms are not easy to find. So, they are low in supply, and at least in the case of Warlocks, high in demand. They don't show up on the Auction House terribly often, because they are somewhat difficult to grind for, and the potions that Warlocks need almost never show up! So, if you're an Herbalist, head over to the Hinterlands and start looking. This is one of the few places the show up reliably. They also show up in Marudon, the Desolace instance, if you can solo it.

It's hard work getting these, but the rewards make it worth it. Warlocks, in a frenzy to get their awesome-looking mount, and NOT going to want to spend days on end grinding these mushrooms, and then brewing the potions. If they aren't Herbalist/Alchemy, they have no choice but to buy them! I don't recommend putting these on the Auction House, at least not all of them. Make sure to poll your guild or in /trade to see who needs them. Most Warlocks are aware of what they need before they even begin the quest, so they won't mind getting a jump start on materials!

Questing at Level 70

Here's something many people don't consider. When you hit level 70, the experience you can no longer get from a quest is made up for by having a larger gold reward. Currently, my quests in Netherstorm are worth 11g99s, even the easiest little things!

When I was leveling, I grinded quite a bit for gold. The end result is that I've still got 3 ENTIRE zones of untouched quests. At at least 12g per, and 20g for elite/group quests, that's more than enough for my first flying mount, especially when added to the gold I'll get from drops! Don't underestimate this, everyone. There's a huge difference between getting 3.9 gold for a quest and getting 12 gold per quest. This can be serious money, and you still get the equipment and reputation. It's win-win-win! So, if you've got the stomach for grinding, do it! Save up those quests, and complete them at 70. Your wallet will thank you!

Tag Team Blacksmith/Enchanter

There's a lot of waste produced when raising crafting skills. When I was grinding up Blacksmithing, I had more Fel Iron Breastplates and other items than I knew what to do with! I couldn't sell them reliably, so I ended up just vendoring them for a little under 5g each, which is only a little less than they went for on the AH.

Still, there are much better ways to deal with the waste you get from Jewelcrafting, Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Tailoring, or Engineering. All you need is an enchanter friend or alt. What I recommend doing is when you begin leveling a trade skill, roll an alt as an Enchanter.

Now, as you grind out endless greens and occasional blues to level up your craft, send them to your enchanter to disenchant. Not only does your enchanter get skill ups for doing this, they also get tons of enchanting material. Now, they can keep it, or do what I recommend and SELL it. Enchanting supplies sell far more reliably, and often for more money than what was disenchanted to get it. So, that Fel Iron Plate may not sell well, but the Arcane Dust and occasional Planar Essence or Large Prismatic Shard sure will!

This can be a huge money spinner, or not so huge, depending on how much crafting you do. Still, this is better gold than you're going to get by wasting these items, and it will add up!

Cartographer

For those of you who don't use it, Cartographer is a very nice addon for World of Warcraft that adds a coordinate system to your map. This makes it easier for people to explain where things are on message boards, guild members, etc. It also shows general level brackets for zones, instance maps, and has a whole slew of other great features. Read up on it at the link above!

However! Today, a guildmate of mine tuned me into the fact that Cartographer has another very useful purpose: Gathering! With the use of some nifty databases, Cartographer can put little points on your map showing you where ALL the possible spawn points are in any given area. That can be mining nodes, herbs, treasure, questgivers/turnins, whatever. This makes it so, so easy to follow a route around a zone to gather materials, because you now know every possible place it can spawn. I can't stress how much easier this makes gathering! And unlike Gatherer, you don't have to have found it first for it to show up on your map: it's just given to you!

You can download the databases from Curse, in the form of LUA files. You need Cartographer installed, and you also need to get the dependent program for whichever nodes you want. Look under the "dependencies" header on the link provided.

Installation is simple enough. Make sure you aren't logged in. Extract that Cartographer addon to your World of Warcraft\Interface\Addons folder, and extract the database files (the LUA files) to your \World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\_name_\SavedVariables folder. Make sure you enable the addons on your character select screen, and you're done!

Make Life Easier With Gatherbook!

First of all, if you have a gathering profession, and don't have Gatherer, get it! What it does is keep track of where you've mines, herbs, etc, and what you got from gathering it! Also, it communicates with other Gatherer users in your guild, so anytime someone finds something, you know where! Very useful in large guilds.

Now, Gatherbook takes it a step further. It essentially is lots and lots of Gatherer information rolled into one, so you'll easily be able to see where you need to go to RELIABLY find certain items! It can be kind of confusing to use, so I would direct you all to this page for comprehensive instructions!

Time for another PPP, that is, Particularly Profitable Pattern installment, a guide to buying and reselling vendor items for easy gold!

There's nothing quite as annoying as falling for your own tricks. I've been leveling up Blacksmithing recently, and when I was perusing the Auction House, I ran across Plans: Adamantite Breastplate. This is a very decent chest piece to have when leveling up, especially if it's your first time beyond 60. And if you're a completist, like me, and want ALL the Blacksmithing recipes... well, I bought it out at 13 gold. Only later did I find out it comes from a VENDOR in Telaar! I bought it for over twice as much as it was worth, and counted it a decent deal, until I found all of this out.

So, if you're in the area (check the link above to find out which vendors sell it), look for these plans! If I fell for it, anyone would.

Psychological Tricks on the Auction House

There's no better human trait to exploit than GREED. It's the basis of sales in our society. If something is on sale, you're more likely to buy it, whether or not you need it. After all, it's on SALE! Buy it when it's cheap, because otherwise you'll pay more. You can effectively create a "sale atmosphere" on the Auction House, too! It's kind of underhanded, but it can give you a nice edge.

Find a pair of items on the Auction House, like a blue piece of equipment. You need to have 2 of them, and no others on the Auction House, so take some time to hunt around. Now, send one of the blues to an alt, and list it for a high price, maybe twice the normal price. Then get on your main, and list their's for closer to the real value.

What you're doing is taking advantage of people's eye for good deals, even other Auctioneers. When someone sees how much less your main's listing is than your alt's listing, they are more likely to buy it, because it will seem like such a great deal! Sure, some people will see through it, but we all know there are a lot of unintelligent people in the game, don't we? =D

Easy Disenchanting For Easy Gold

Most people tend to consider Enchanting a money sink. Well, if you're trying to get to 375, it is. ALL professions are money sinks, if you want to get them to 375. But you don't need to be a high level Enchanter for this to work!

Enchanting materials are always in demand. Not only are they used in Enchanting, but some of the materials are used to transmute cloth, or in various other professions. The key is being efficient!

One of my favorite runs for disenchant able items is Scarlet Monastery. Across the 3 areas, there are quite a few bosses! So, this is simple enough. Run the sections as fast as you can, kill the bosses, disenchant their higher-level drops, especially any blues. Rinse, repeat. Obviously, this is best when done by a stealth class, but any high level character can do it. Between Archanist Doan, Commander Mograine, High Inquisitor Whitemane and Herod, there's a lot of potential for profitable disenchanting!

Since this is so easy to do, don't be afraid to undercut the competition more than you might otherwise. You can get more of this stuff more easily than a lot of them probably are, who are only selling the materials they HAPPEN to come across!

Get that First Mount!

There are a ton of tactics out there to help people get their mounts as fast as possible, but I prefer a straightforward approach. This technique works best on older, well-established servers, but also works great on new servers, for other reasons.

The Deadmines. I love this instance. You can easily do it as Horde or Alliance. From about 30 on, you can run it yourself fairly easily. In one run, you'll probably get 6 or 7 or 10 green drops. Low level green drops, right? Who cares?

Well, if you're on an old server, the player population is rich. When they roll a new character, they want to buy what they need, not farm for it. On my server, a Seer's Belt goes for 2 gold. 2 gold is nothing to someone funding their character with a level 70 alt. So, those green items, sold at these very high prices, really do add up.

Alternatively, on a new server, the items will be very in demand again as people level their characters. This means they'll move fast, but as the population isn't as rich as on an old server, you won't be able to charge as much. Still, you can make a mint doing this, at least from a low-level, new player point of view!

Picking Manathistle

Mana Thistle is a great herb for alchemists. Other than having a cool name, it is needed for many higher end recipes, such as the various Cauldrons, and most of the highest level elemental protection and healing/mana potions. Also, when you pick it, it restores some mana! How cool is that?

Mana Thistle can only be picked by a master Herbalist, that is, 375 skill. Aside from that, the places it grows most consistently can only be reached with a flying mount! So, this is not an easy herb to get, which means it tends to sell high and well.

In Terokkar Forest, you can pick it in the southeast corner, at Skettis. Also, in the Barrier Hills just above the Aldor base.
In Blade's Edge Mountains, check out the Pinnacle Vortext to the west, and Felstorm Point in the north.
In Netherstorm, in the northwest, at Socrethar's Seat.
In Shadowmoon Valley, check out the southeastern Netherwing Ledge.

Here's a link to Thottbot to help you. Just click on the zone you want to check out and it'll bring up a map. This stuff sells for 50-60 gold per stack on most servers, so if you're an Herbalist, get picking!

Price Manipulation For Easy Profits

Update: This method simply will not work. There are too many rich players out there, using the Auction House just like you. If they see your low prices, they'll snap it all up and relist it for 5 times your price. Even if you flood the market, it will all be gone. Unfortunately, the economies are too full of legitly and non-legitly rich players to pull something like this off. =(

So, this occurred to me as I drove to work today. I've been trying various things on the Auction House lately, and I plan to try this over the next week or so.

The way people make money in the Auction House is to buy low, and sell at actual value or even higher. But what if the low bids aren't low enough to turn a nice profit? If the market isn't gigantic (like Linen Cloth, or other low-level crafting items), you can tilt the market just enough to really make a killing.

Find your market of choice. The items must be frequently bought on the Auction House, but not so huge that you can't control it a little. Mid and high-level crafting materials usually make good candidates. Again, I'm using Mithril Bars. I buy all of the bars available at auction. I then relist a small portion of them for significantly less than they are actually worth. Seems crazy, I know, but bear with me. Now, when someone decides to post more Mithril Bars, they are forced to undercut you to sell them. Buy those, too. Buy all of them you need to in order to keep your auctions in the majority, and force the overly low prices. When you've built up a good amount, let your auctions expire/sell out, and post no more.

What we're doing here is deliberately driving down prices. If all went well, you've now got a decent stock of whatever item you chose, and you acquired them rather far below market value. Now, simply allow the prices to rebound to regular levels. It could take a day or two. To speed it up, buy out all of the auctions again, and relist them for the prices they went for before you drove them down. Now you can re-sell the items you bought at rock-bottom for their actual worth. You can even undercut for more than you normally would, because your profits will still be huge! If you try this, let me know how it works out in the comments. I'll keep my results posted.

Some things to watch out for that are occurring to me now that I'm checking out the Auction House:

It must be an active market! If no one is posting items in competition, people are just going to buy your low listings, and prices will go back to normal.
There is a risk that the market is smart enough that competitors will simply wait for your items to be sold, rather than lose their own profits to underbid you. For this reason, a gradual slide down in price might be necessary.

My Ore Experiment, Part 2

Okay, so, I made 30 gold profit by selling the Mithril Bars I bought. However, there is simply too much Mithril on the market to control it all. I can't afford to buy 190 bars a day. So, the market is too big, but the concept is sound.

I'm moving on to Felsteel bars. There is 1 stack of 5 on my Auction House right now, and I'm going to buy it, break it apart, and sell the pieces for more. I'll let you know how it goes!

My Ore Experiment

Okay, so here's my latest experiment in the Auction House. I'm taking Mithril Bars, and buying every one I see. Usually, there's only 8 or 9 listings, so it's not a huge investment. Then, I break them up into smaller amounts (1-6 bars) and re-list them, but raise the price of each individual bar. For example, I bought 20 bars for 17 gold, which puts each bar at a little less than 1 gold. I re-listed them in smaller amounts, with the prices per bar at 1.5 gold. This way, the total amount is less, but I'm actually making profit. Also, I can now cater to people who only need 1 bar, or 2, or whatever, who might not buy if I listed in stacks of 20.

Really, it's just a way of tricking the consumer. Like how everything is $xx.99. The fact that it's 1 penny less than a whole new number doesn't matter, because it LOOKS cheaper, as long as the front numbers are small. So, this is kind of a dirty trick I'm trying, to see if I can short-sight the buyers and make easy profit.
I'll keep you updated on how this works out!

Jewelcrafting - Sparkly Gems for Fun and Profit

Most people consider Jewelcrafting kind of a money sink. I'm not sure where this rhetoric came from, but go on and ask someone if they think Jewelcrafting is a good money spinner. It's like asking of Blacksmithing can make money for you. Well, it's partly true. You stand to spend a lot of money raising your Jewelcrafting skill, but once you hit 315, you're golden for my purposes.

If you're a miner, save the high-end ore you mine. If you need to, buy it from the Auction House. Once your Jewelcrafting his 275, you can prospect Fel Iron Ore, and once it hits 315, you can prospect Adamantite Ore. Prospecting means you use the ore in order to look for gems in it. Gem drop rates have gotten a boost lately, which is nice, though it knocked prices down. The process is simple: get ore, prospect gems, hope for a blue, sell uncut gems. Even if you have to buy the ore, you might be able to easily make up the profit by selling the gems. Check your Auction House prices on gems before you do this! If they're really low, you might want to wait for the market to go back up.

The best part about this tip is that is conceivably requires no effort from you. Buy ore, sell gems, repeat. With the right economy under you, you can stand to make a ton of money by doing this!

Swiftthistle Is Always in Demand!

Probably the most useful item in a Rogue's bag is Thistle Tea. This stuff gives back 40 energy when you drink it, which is a vital component for many perma-stun combos, and is simply darn useful at any point. Given that, there's always a market for this stuff. Now, take into consideration that Swiftthistle, the herb used to make it, CANNOT be picked directly, and you have a winner. Swiftthistle is also used in some other useful potions, like the Swiftness Potion, and agility potions!

Swiftthistle is randomly-found when you pick Briarthorn and Mageroyal, and has a small chance of dropping off of some mobs. Now, this is important. Not only is Swiftthistle useful, it is very hard to come by. If you know how to farm it, you can make a lot of money!

My advice? Don't bother with mobs. It's too unreliable. Grab your herbalist, go to Westfall, and pick every bit of Briarthorn and Mageroyal you see. Westfall is the best for this, I think, because both herbs are in the area. Briarthorn can be found in lots of places, but usually with higher-level herbs, like Goldthorn, for example. Also, if you're Alliance, you're 100% ungankable while you work, and if you're even level 20, the mobs won't be any problem for you.

So, pick pick pick! When you get some stacks, pop those onto the Auction House. You'll be amazed at how high a stack of 20 of these l0w-level herbs sells for!

Rep and Gold From Skyguard Quests

Right now, the Holy Grail of World of Warcraft is getting an epic flying mount. A massive 280% speed increase, and the added bonus of being able to avoid troublesome ground paths and mobs entirely! No wonder everyone wants one.

To get one, you must first be exalted with the Sha'tari Skyguard faction of Shattrath. Now, grinding rep with them is a little different, because it is done mainly through "daily quests", which are quests that can be done every day, but only once each day. They give not only Skyguard rep, but also 12+ gold per quest! Do the 4 daily quests each day, and you're looking at a lot of gold! Of course, this is intentional, because it takes 5000 gold to get the epic flying mount. By the time you get Exalted with Skyguard, you'll have earned a ton of gold.

First thing to do is complete Threat From Above in Terokkar, to join the Skyguard. Then, simply do each quest every day. Here are the 4 main Skyguard quests, linked to Thottbot. There are more quests that can be repeated each day; I will be adding them soon enough.

Skyguard quests: Fires Over Skettis, Escape From Skettis, Bomb Them Again, Wrangle More Rays.

Grinding Scryer Rep

The Scryer are one of 2 factions that you will have to choose to be friends with in Shattrath, in Terokkar Forest. The main benefit to getting Exalted with one faction or the other is that they sell some pretty nice gear at that level! Plus, the grind up to Exalted will load you with lots of money, and tons of experience!

I recently did a post on the official forums about this, but here it is in a more convenient location.

To get to Honored with the Scryers, you need to turn in Firewing Signets. The best way to get them is to head over to Terokkar's Firewing Point. These mobs, especially the casters, are very squishy, and you'll go through them like butter at high level 60s or 70. Being humanoid, they drop cloth and silver, as well as occasional greens. Bonus! Turn these in to the quest giver on the Scryer section of Shattrath.

For getting to Revered and Exalted, you need Sunfury Signets and Arcane Tomes. The various manaforges in Netherstorm have mobs for the signets (Blood Knights, Bloodwarders, any other Sunfury mobs). There are lots of forges to choose from, so finding one for yourself shouldn't be too hard. They all drop Sunfury Signets often enough to farm effectively. They will also occasionally drop the Tomes!

Don't forget, rep items can be bought easily. Everyone (you included) probably has rep items for the other faction. Don't junk or vendor them. Sell them, or trade them to other players. They're probably holding on to rep items they have no use for, too! Best place to look for deals like this Shattrath, in Terokkar.

Netherweb Spider Silk

Netherweb Spider Silk is needed in almost every Tailoring recipe above 350. This stuff is particularly hard to get (unless you read this!), so a lot of players resort to simply buying it.

Now, one good place to get it is in Terokkar Forest. My favorite spot is the little green strip of land on the East side of the Bone Wastes. Look for Allerian Stronghold on your map, and then follow the mountain range south, and you should see it. There are more spiders here than elsewhere in Terokkar. However, the drop rate is rather low, and it is very often farmed. But even a low amount of silk will sell for a pretty penny!

Now, if you happened to be able to go into the Caverns of Time, I suggest the Black Morass. Look for Blackfang Tarantulas. Like most non-elite instance mobs, they give no rep per kill. Worthless, right? Wrong! They have a decent chance of dropping Netherweb Spider Silk! And the best part is, there is no competition if you're farming in an instance. These mobs are only 67-69; very easy for a level 70 rip through. If you kill them all, just reset the instance. When you're bags are full, hit the Auction House. Don't be afraid to undercut the competition to sell! When you sell all of yours, that negligible loss of gold won't even matter. Happy farming!

Give Me Direction

Skinning for Gold in Winterspring

Any area that has an excess of animal mobs is a great place to skin. Lately, Nagrand in Outlands has been getting a lot of attention, and rightly so, as it is simply amazing for high-level skinners.

But what if you aren't a high-level skinner? Where can you go to raise your skill quickly, and earn some decent gold at the same time? Try Winterspring! Shardtooth Bears (and Elder Shardtooths more specifically) can be skinned here for Rugged Leather and Warbear Leather. Remember what I mentioned in a previous post: lower level craft items sell even more well than higher ones, because there are simply more lower-level crafters. Head to Winterspring with some nearly empty bags, fill up, and go hit that auction house. Remember, if you're a Leatherworker too, you can turn that leather into other items that may sell even higher than the leather alone. Know your market, and do some research before unloading it all. And remember, let people KNOW it's for sale in the /trade channel!

May the Grind Be With You - Shadowmoon Valley's Legion Hold

So, I'm currently in the middle of grinding for Aldor rep, and I've discovered my favorite place to grind that, experience, and items: The Legion Hold in Shadowmoon Valley. I mentioned it in an earlier post, but it bears going over in more detail.

If you're melee, you want to go after the Wrathwalkers. They hit me (warri0r) for about 80-100 each hit, without a shield. They attack slowly, and other than they only cast one spell, maybe once per battle, and it can be easily interrupted. They have low armor and low HP, and I have been cutting through them in under 10 seconds, usually. They drop Marks of Sargeras, which is what I was there for. But they also drop Netherweave like candy -- I got 100 pieces in an hour. I also got 3 decent greens.

I only ever saw a few other people here, and even if there are, there are tons of mobs. Casters, you can probably focus on whichever mobs you want. Just be warned, the Terrormasters cast fear sometimes, which can run you into more mobs, even when they're spaced out as they are here. Otherwise, these mobs are unremarkable in their abilities.

Ranging in level from 67 to 68, this is a great place to farm gold (especially if Netherweave sells well on your server, and it does on most!), and simply grind out levels. I was hitting about 110k xp/hour. Plus, there are Horde/Alliance areas nearby, if you need to junk vendor trash, mail stuff to your banker, or buy more food/water.

A Typical Day in the Auction House

My Auctioning on Monday-Thursday is fairly limited. On any given day I scan the Auction House about 3 times: morning, afternoon, night. After each scan, I immediately check for auctions almost finished, and place my bids if the profit is high enough. On Friday afternoon/evening, I do a scan and put up everything I have. This is when the most players will be logging on for the weekend. I do the same on Saturday evening and Sunday evening.

Having just moved to the Kil'Jaeden server, I'm still feeling out the economy. With my current data, the top profiting items are always "Savory Deviate Delight", because my data is not built up enough. It's very frustrating, actually, having the market skewed like this. In time, and with more data, it will reflect correct market information. Until then, I'm walking carefully so I don't get burned. Still, I've made about 150g profit on very modest auctioneering in a couple of weeks. This number has gone a lot higher, but I'm back to work for the summer and working on leveling my main, so I'm not in profit-overdrive. Once I hit 70 and need money for the epic flying mount, THEN I'll be having some fun, and probably do a more detailed log of my auctions.

In my experience, the highest profit items are almost always blues, and crafting items, usually in stacks.

I check the blue items for how often they've been seen at Auction - items that have only been seen a few times are either rare, or just very poor sellers that people know better than to put up. Or, they can been seen many times, in which case they either move very quickly, or barely at all; either case will have it appearing in many scans. So, it does take a little bit of market knowledge to know what's in demand. The easiest way to gauge blues is to just look at the item. If it's a great item, take it. If it's something you'd probably never want on a character, let it be. Some blues are just not that good. One important thing to remember is that if you're putting a blue item up is that you'll be paying a lot in deposits, and you aren't likely to sell the item in the first few auctions. They do take some time to move. To avoid the fee, I usually check the Auction House for duplicates, and unless they're priced too low for me to undercut, I advertise in the /trade channel that I'm selling one for cheaper than the Auction House. If you don't have time to sit around and do that, just post that you're putting it up for auction at less than all the other competition. Be patient! Wait for the weekend to sell -- more people are on, more money is moving. If someone undercuts you, or a bidding war drives down prices, wait for them to come back up. I've got a level 70 blue dagger that I'm waiting to sell, because the prices have dropped from 100+ gold to 40 gold! I could still profit if I sold it at 40 (I bought it very low), but I'll make much more if I wait for prices to go up. If you see an item is going to become harder to get in the next patch, or have its stats boosted, BUY IT. Prices are going to go up.

The other items I make the most profit off of are generally stackable items like Nexus Crystals, other enchanting items, crafting items, and recipes. Buy low, sell high, simple enough. I bought a stack of 4 Nexus Crystals yesterday for about 20 gold. I broke the stack into singles, and sold them each for about 10 gold, which was still 2 gold under the market. When you buy in stacks, it's easier to sell them individually, because people don't have to buy more than they want.

Any time I buy items, I advertise the better deals in /trade. Some people just aren't browsing the Auction House when you're on, and you don't want to miss them, so spend at least a couple minutes doing this. Also, keep your eye on the trade channel yourself. Some good deals can be found there!

When I play the Auction House, I generally do most of my buying/bidding on high profit items, as I just started new on the server and don't have as much money as I'd want if I'm going to buy tons of items. Still, the better option is generally to buy even the low-profit items, so long as you buy according to market needs. The gold does add up, and fast. Don't be afraid to try moving new items. But I do advise that you find a niche and corner it. Specialize in certain items that you KNOW sell well. If it's a small market, monopolize it. If you're the only one ever offering the item, you can set the price. I'm thinking of doing that with a couple of blues I'm seeing fairly often, but it's a significant investment, so I'm not decided yet.

When I'm done hawking my items or sharking others, I get on a different character and check some vendors for recipes and the like (see my PPP posts). Usually I can snag at least a couple, and I send them to my banker to sell.

I'll do a more detailed post when I have the time to sell more, and a better idea of Kil'Jaeden's economy!

PPP: Major Healing Potion

Time for another PPP, that is, Particularly Profitable Pattern installment, a guide to buying and reselling vendor items for easy gold!

If a potion's usefulness has a direct impact upon the desire to have the recipe, this is near the top of the list. Enter: Major Healing Potion! Who doesn't need to be able to make healing potions for free, just by wandering around and finding the herbs, sometimes without even particularly looking? Healing potions are a hot commodity, because they're dead useful, and more importantly, useful to a broad range of Alchemists (read: all of them).

Evie Whirlbrew of Winterspring. She sells this recipe for 1.5 gold. Don't think you can get it without a fight -- other players want this too, either to use or resell. Best to check right after the servers come back up, or keep a character near this vendor and check every few hours.

May the Grind Be With You - Terokkar's Shadow Tomb

The best grinding spots are places where the mobs are relatively easy for their level, plentiful, but not dangerously so, and somewhere where you'll be safe and left in peace by both factions.

Go to Terokkar and look on your map. In the Bone Wastes, there are 2 icons for buildings of a sort. The one on the left is a Shadow Tomb. It's a 3-wing area, and each wing has 7 to 10 mobs, built of warrior types, mage types, and rogue types. Now, the rogues don't stealth, the mages don't do much damage, and the warriors are rather squishy. They're level 64 and 65, mostly.

This spot is a fantastic place to grind from maybe 65 or 66 on. Not only will you get tons of Aldor rep items (Marks of Kil'Jaeden and Fel Armaments), you'll rarely find other players in here, because most people grind on the mobs above the surface, not in the tomb. The mobs are easy to pull one at a time, and even if you pull two, you can probably handle it. I grinded here for about 1 hour, and I got 3 greens, 1 blue (Boots of Savagery), 50 marks of Kil'Jaeden, 4 stacks of Netherweave, and 1 stack of Runecloth. I was averaging about 120,000xp per hour, because by the time you clear the last wing, the 1st wing is respawned. There is almost no downtime aside from resting.

Grind on!

Enchantrix + Auction House = Gold

Enchantrix is an addon that takes advantage of a very powerful skill: disenchanting. Do you ever see a green item for sale and think to yourself, "What a useless item. No one will buy that." Well, YOU can buy that, disenchant it, and sell the raw materials you glean from it.

Enchantrix makes this process so much more efficient. It, like Auctioneer, builds a database of how much certain enchanting materials sell for, and which items yield which materials. With this, it can compare how much a certain Auction House item costs to how much you could sell the materials for if you disenchanted it. So, you can scan the Auction House, find items that sell more when disenchanted, buy those items and disenchant them, and sell the materials for profit!

This is a great way to make money AND raise your Enchanting skill. These materials are always in demand, because Enchanters are always in need of them. So, if you're getting tired of just using Auctioneer, give Enchantrix a try! I will be posting a more detailed guide in the days to follow.

PPP: Major Mana Potion

Time for another PPP, that is, Particularly Profitable Pattern installment, a guide to buying and reselling vendor items for easy gold!

Everyone loves an Alchemist, because their potions can be used by anyone. One of the most valuable potions for other players is the Major Mana Potion. They sell very well in the Auction House. Unfortunately, the recipe is BoP, so you can't sell it anymore. Still, Major Mana Potions are easy for you to make, and who doesn't love an Alchemist who can make useful potions!

It sells for only 3 gold from Magnus Frostwake in the Western Plaguelands, so if you're in the area, buy one. You have to have completed the Butcher Scholomance quest to be able to see this shop, which explains why so few people know it's here.

May the Grind Be With You - The Legion Hold

Keeping in theory with my guide about farming in Deadwind Pass, here's another tip on a great spot to simply grind mobs for reliable gold. These are good things to know, because selling items to other players is simply too variable of a thing to be relied on ALL the time.

Go to Shadowmoon Valley, to the Legion Hold. Here, you'll find Terrormasters, Wrathwalkers and Mo'Arg Weaponsmiths. They aren't terribly hard to kill, and there are lots of them! They drop silver, Aldor rep items, and Netherweave. They also have a chance of dropping Eternium Lockboxes, and various other greens and blues.

Remember, it isn't always about being smart. Grinding mobs is a reliable way to bring in some quick gold, as long as you've got the patience for it!

Nothing Fancy About Deadwind Pass

This one doesn't require and finesse, skill, or luck. It requires a lot of patience, and preferably, something to keep your mind engaged. I like to do this while watching a movie or something. Yses, it is that mindless.

Go to Deadwind pass. Now, run the route shown here. Kill everything you see. Repeat ad nauseum. These mobs don't drop any great blues, recipes, not much of notice. What they do drop is vendor trash, and a lot of it. Since the mobs are only 56-57, a high 60s or level 70 could do this nonstop with little pause.

Don't think this doesn't work because it's boring, everyone. It IS boring, but the vendor loot ads up FAST, especially if you're here alone. You can stand to make 2 or 3 gold per 10 minutes here, just by mindlessly killing the mobs you encounter. Just goes to show, sometimes the best way to do it is also the simplest.

A Brief Word on Buying or Selling Gold

To put it bluntly, I do NOT support the practice of buying World of Warcraft Gold, or selling to companies. Some of you who read my site (oh, how lucky and rare you are, gentle reader!) may have noticed that my Google ads are serving up gold-selling sites. Not to worry! Thanks to Google's Competitive Ad filter, I've blocked every gold-selling site I can find on Google, to keep that kind of content off of the page. I'll be blocking ones that continue to show up as I see them. Hopefully, with time, I'll be rid of that kind of content. (After all, encouraging people to BUY gold runs contrary to my desire to make people read my guides! ;)

Herbalize Those Guys!

Never having been a fan of herbalism, I never realized you could "herbalize" plant enemies, essentially allowing you to get extra loot from them! Here's a cool tip I found which will have you making some nice money!

Go to Skettis, in southeastern Terokkar Forest. Look around the lake there for Talonsworn Forest-Rangers. Usually there are 2 up, and respawn in under 5 minutes. It's not the loot you want from them, because their loot isn't anything special. But if you're an Herbalist, you can "herbalize" them and get 2 sets of herbs containing 2 to 4 herbs, which can include: Felweed, Dreaming Glory, Mana Thistle, Terocone, Ancient Lichen, and even Black Lotus, one of the hardest herbs to find in the game. They can also give up to FIVE motes of life at a time.

They're 69-72 elites, but they can be stunned/feared, so a well-geared Warlock or Hunter or maybe Mage could solo them. Otherwise, bring a friend. If it takes about 2 minutes to kill one, you could do them almost non-stop until you were tired. At that kind of rate, you'd be able to make a huge profit from all of those herbs and motes of life.

The Complete Primal Farming Guide

"Primals" are needed by most high level professions and crafting recipes. They are created by collecting 10 motes of the same element, and combining them.

The demand for Primals is high, and what is more, unless Blizzard makes some very unexpected and dramatic (and silly) changes, demand is not going to go down. In fact, as more and more players achieve level 70, demand is only likely to go UP. This all means that farming Primals can be very lucrative, IF you know what you’re doing, and willing to put in some time.

Before I get into the best ways to farm for these items, there are a couple ways to get them without the need to farm. Check the Auction House for motes. They aren’t frequently for sale, given their value, and when they are, most players are good about calculating value according to current Primal prices. But still, keep an eye out. With some patience and luck, you’ll sometimes find you can buy 10 motes for less than a Primal is going for, and make a profit!

Dealer Najeeb and Dealer Tariq, in Netherstorm and Terokkar respectively, sell various motes, under limited supply (3 of each kind). IF you’re around either of them, give them a check and see if they have any. At 16 silver each, they’re a bargain, but don’t expect to find them in stock much. (Hint: Keep a character by them at all times, and check them as soon as the server comes back up!) Don’t try to farm motes from these dealers, it is too unreliable!

Understand first that Primals are a huge deal right now. You aren’t the only player looking for them, and so you’ll often find your spot of choice is inhabited. If that happens, just move on to a different spot, or wait a few hours and try again. Expect to be semi-frequently attacked by the opposing faction, as well. However, often the other faction’s farmers will leave you alone, as it’s in both of your best interests to make as much profit as peacefully as you can.

Farming Primal Earth
Anything that looks like a big, floaty-swirling pile of rocks is a likely candidate for Motes of Earth. Far and away, I prefer Nagrand for the large amount of likely mobs to kill, and their relatively low level (mid 60s) There are plenty of Shattered Rumblers south of Osh’gun, near the edge of the world. You can also find various earth-based creatures wandering Nagrand proper (Tortured Earth Spirits and Enraged Crushers), so be sure to kill them when you see them! You can make runs along the mountain’s edge between the Throne of the Elements and Laughing Skull Keep to find Enraged Crushers.

As a bonus, Nagrand contains a lot of mining nodes, especially if you’re running the mountains I mentioned above. You can often get 3 or 4 motes from node, so if you’re a miner, this place is perfect.

In Shadowmoon Valley, you can go to the center of the zone to the Hand of Gul’Dan and kill Enraged Earth Spirits. They won’t drop as easily as the mobs in Nagrand, but when they drop additional loot, it will be better!

Primal Earths fetch the lowest price in the Auction House, probably owing that there aren’t a huge amount of good, popular items that especially need them. They’re also the easiest to get, thanks to them being found during mining. HOWEVER, if you are an alchemist, or know one, they can Transmute your Primal Earths into Primal Water!

Farming Primal Air
All those high-level tornado-looking mobs drop Motes of Air. Again, Nagrand is a great place to farm these, because of the Throne of the Elements. If you have a flying mount, head to the northeastern corner to get there. You’ll find plenty of Storming Wind-Rippers here. Be advised though, this place is constantly and heavily farmed by both factions.

Again, you can find more in Shadowmoon Valley, in the southeastern area. Look for mobs called Enraged Air Spirits. There is another group of them north of the Altar of Shatar.

Farming Primal Water
According to Thottbot, Shimmerscale Eels seem to be the best combination of low-level and decent % drops. They can be found in Terokkar Forest, at Slimyr Lake, north of Shattrath. These mobs drop fast, and have a decent drop rate. However, I found them to be always heavily farmed. Still, it’s a decent area to spend some time at, and there is also a lot of good mining in the mountain area.

You can also go to the Elemental Plateau in Nagrand and kill Crashing Wave Spirits for these. Previous warnings about this area still apply, especially to Motes of Water, as Primal Water is a particularly huge seller on most servers. Still, the elementals respawn quickly, and drop high-level greens sometimes, so this is a very good place to farm.

Another favorite spot of mine are Lake Spirits, found in Nagrand, in the lake just south of the Throne of the Elements. The lake is huge, so even if others are farming, you can probably go about your business steadily and in relative peace. I usually get about 20 motes per hour or so. If you’re not Undead or a Druid, and you have some Nagrand Cherrys left over from A Rare Bean, they let you breath underwater for 30 minutes per cherry. Otherwise, get a Deepdive Helmet, which lets you breath under water.

Muck Spawns around Halaa also drop motes of water, with the added benefit that you don’t need to be under water all the time. Blackwind Lake in Skettis in Terokkar Forest has Skettis Surgers, and they can also drop them. This place is somewhat less-often farmed, in my experience. Watch out for the 72 elite! He is deceptively sneaky.

Most high-level fishing spots will also fetch you Motes of Water. Look for Pure Water and fish! That also means you can combine killing at the lakes with fishing. But be warned! Other people want to farm these, too, and there are only so many viable farming spots in the world. Any popular primal farming spot is a good place to get PK’ed.

Farming Primal Fire
Motes of Fire can also be farmed at the Elemental Plateau in Nagrand. See why that place is so popular and dangerous? Kill Raging Fire-Souls there, they drop them often.

You can also go to Forge Camp Terror in the Bladefist Mountains to kill Vile Fire-Souls. This place is nicely out of the way, and you'll have a better chance to farm in peace here. Also in the Bladefist Mountains (northeastern part) you can go to Skald and kill Searing Elementals.

The Hand of Gul'Dan in Shadowmoon valley is another good source of Motes of Fire. Kill Enraged Fire Spirits here.

Wherever you go, if you've got fire resist gear, use it. It will greatly decrease your time between mobs, which will increase your gold per hour! Just watch your back -- if you had an easy time getting to the spot, opposing players will be able to as well, and they'd probably love to kill you.

Primal Fire sells very well in the Auction House!

Farming Primal Mana
Netherstorm is just about the only place where you can farm for Motes of Mana. I recommend Wizard’s Row in Kirin’Var village. Look for Mana Seekers and Mageslayers. You can drop these guys pretty quickly, and make great gold here.

Head south of Area 52 and you’ll find Nether Rays and Mana Wraiths. You can also kill Mana Snappers along the edges of the islands (check Thottbot for a map), which are less frequently farmed.

Primal Mana is probably one of the most expensive Primals on the Auction House, so don’t be afraid to sell high.

Farming Primal Life
The Bone Wastes in Terokkar are a great place to farm lower-level mobs. Look for Infested Root Walkers and Rotting Forest Ragers, which both have decent drop rates, and are only around level 64.

The Dead Mire in Zangamarsh is another good spot, with even lower level enemies. Remember how many Withered Bog Lords you killed here when you were questing? They’ll go down even more easily if you’re around 70, and they drop Motes of Life regularly.

Primal Life, like Primal Earth, is fairly easy to come by, and so doesn’t fetch a huge price in the Auction House, unfortunately.

Farming Primal Shadow
Motes of Shadow are the most easy to come by, out of all of them. Go to Hellfire Peninsula’s Pools of Aggonar and kill Terrorfiends for them. They are only level 61 ish, and you’ll go through them like butter. Chances are this was the first place you saw a Mote of anything drop, and you said to yourself “What the heck is this thing?” There’s also less of a chance of any higher-level PK’ers wandering around.

Also in Hellfire Peninsula is The Warp Fields, in the south. Kill the Uncontrolled Voidwalkers to quickly build up your Mote of Shadow supply. There seems to be an endless supply of these mobs, and I’ve never seen them farmed.

Cobra Scales Sell

Sometimes, I think when Blizzard adds a new item to World of Warcraft, I don't think they check to see what's already available. Case in point, these leatherworking patterns:

Nethercobra Leg Armor
Cobrahide Leg Armor

Nethercobra Leg Armor requires some pretty hefty resources, not to mention being EXALTED with Honor Hold or Thrallmar. Who's exalted with Honor Hold or Thrallmar? Hardly anyone, that's right. But wait, do you even NEED to make Nethercobra Leg Armor?

Cobrahide Leg Armor has only 2 points less crit rating, and 10 less attack power. So, it's a fraction of a percent of crit lost, and maybe 2 points of damage lost. You only have to be HONORED with Honor Hold or Thrallmar to get the pattern, and the materials are much, much less expensive to the leatherworker.(doesn't need primal nethers, and only half as many primal airs!).

Whichever one you make, it sells well. Twinks love it, and well-geared players love it because it ads some more "oomph" to their already uber items. You can make it yourself, or just farm and sell the most difficult to come by component in the recipe, Cobra Scales.

Yes, everyone, that IS a 1.7% drop rate. What does that mean? They're darn hard to come by! And they're DARN expensive to buy (so they're DARN profitable to sell! 20-30 gold PER SCALE). Head over to Shadowmoon Valley's Coilskar Cistern and kill Coilskar Cobras. If you only see 3 or 4, go into the cave to find more. If you get lucky on the drops, you stand to make maybe 80 to 100 gold per hour, here.

Recycle Raw Materials

It's amazing to me how many gold earning guides don't cover some of the less obtuse, more subtle ways to earn gold in World of Warcraft. Here's one of my favorites!

If you've got a crafting skill, you need to go to the Auction House and check out the prices on some things: Raw materials. The goal is to find unworked materials, buy them, turn them into something else, and sell that for more than you spent for the materials. This works, everyone, it just takes some careful planning or market information.

For example, a leatherworker might check out the price for Knothide Leather. If the price of buying 100 knothide leather is 60 gold, and the price for a stack of 20 Heavy Knothide Leather is 100 gold, you can buy the raw materials, rework it, and sell it at a profit. This gives you more skill ups, and free profit. You can do this for as long as you can find the raw materials in the auction house. It's especially useful for crafting skills, because stuff like this example don't have cool downs.

Open up your craft window and find an item you think people need. Search it in the Auction House and get an idea of average price. Then search out the components, and see what they cost. Even if the average prices come out to be the same, if the market is undervalue on the components (if people keep undercutting each other) or over value on the final product, you can still make a profit before the prices even out. You just have to make a point to look for deals like this.

So go to your Auction House and sniff around a bit! There are plenty of people waiting to be taken advantage of!

Heavy Knothide Leather

The best thing about World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade is that they added so many high-level patterns to the craft skills. This is great for YOU, because it means materials are perpetually in demand! Heavy Knothide Leather is very popular right now for higher-level recipes, as people grind their way to 375 in leatherworking.

Before you begin farming this, head for Shattrath to get Pattern: Heavy Knothide Leather from
Cro Threadstrong. It's also sold in Silvermoon City by Tyn and Zaralda. Now you can turn 5 Knothide Leathers into Heavy Knothide Leather.

The best place to get this, in my opinion, is in Terokkar, in a cave where you can find Blackwind Sabrecats (map). Now, you can skin them and make the leather yourself, which is good money, and 100% profit. OR, you can take advantage of other people's hard work. Less profit, but it's easier to do, and more convenient. Read on!

Go to the Auction House (with the pattern learned), and buy stacks of Knothide Leather. Buy up, oh, 100 knothide leathers. Then turn that into a stack of 20 Heavy Knothide Leather. In most economies, you'll be able to sell that stack of 20 at a profit of 30 gold or so over what you paid for the raw materials. MAKE SURE YOU VERIFY THIS FIRST. If Heavy Knothide Leather is down in price, this will obviously not work, and cost you gold.

As an added bonus, you'll be getting skill ups as you do this, whichever method you choose.

Skinning For Big Gold

If you're a skinner, Nagrand is probably the closest to heaven you'll find, even though it probably smells pretty awful. Nagrand is FULL of skinnable mobs, and many aren't even hostile until you attack them!

You'll want to get the quests At Nessingwary's Expidition at the entrance to the zone, because you'll kill enough mobs while skinning to complete them easily.

Once you get the quests, go do them, and skin every mob you kill. Because there are simply so MANY mobs, there's very little downtime spent trying to find them. Kill, skin, repeat. You can make anywhere from 70 to 85 gold an hour here, with the grays they drop, leather to sell, and occasional green items.

Aldor/Scryers Rep Items For Gold

People take rep very seriously in World of Warcraft. Higher rep with factions means more quests, nifty vendor rewards, etc.

Thankfully, people also take being lazy very seriously! Because of this, there is a good market for getting rep items yourself, and selling them to other people. A lazy, rich player would much rather BUY the rep items than farm it themselves. They have more important things to do!

Aldor
Go to Osh'Gun in Nagrand, and kill Terrorguards and Ritualists. Not only do they have even odds of dropping Marks of Kil'jaeden (needed to raise Aldor to Honored), but as humanoids they reglularly drop netherweave cloth. On my server, Kil'jaeden, Netherweave is going for between 3.5 and 4 gold a stack! It's like bathing 2 orcs with 1 bar of soap! Or killing 2 birds with one stone.

You can also farm in the Northwestern Bone Wastes in Terokkar. Cabal-anythings drop these marks often, also Netherweave and Runecloth.

To get to Revered and Exalted, you need Marks of Sargeras and Fel Armaments. Legion Hold in Shadowmoon Valley is a good place to farm for the former, because they drop other sellable loot on top of the marks. Also in Shadowmoon Valley, hit up The Deathforge. Lots of marks, lots of other good loot! And while you're farming at either of these spots, be on the lookout for Fel Armanents. They have maybe a 5% chance of being dropped by these mobs too, so really you're farming for 2 things at the same time, AND making money/getting loot.

In Netherstorm, check out Forge Camps Oblivion and Gehenna. All these mobs drop Aldor rep items and other loot, and they aren't even particularly tough to kill!

Scryers
To get to Honored with the Scryers, you need to turn in Firewing Signets, to head over to Terokkar's Firewing Point. These mobs, especially the casters, are very squishy. And again, they drop tons of cloth, so you're working double here.

For getting to Revered and Exalted, you need Sunfury Signets and Arcane Tomes. The various manaforges in Netherstorm have mobs for the signets (Blood Knights, Bloodwarders, and Researchers). There are lots of forges to choose from, so finding one for yourself shouldn't be too hard.

As with the Fel Armaments for the Aldor, these same mobs you're farming will also drop Arcane Tomes! Insert clever 2-birds-with-one-stone phrase here!

Who doesn't love a treasure chest? That's right, everyone in World of Warcraft does! A treasure chest has a higher percentage of holding good items than a mob's corpse does. Here's a trick for a high-level rogue or priest, to continually loot one in the Auchenai Crypts for good gold and items!

Get into the instance, and make your way to the end of the second room (stealth, or mind sooth and luck!) Chances are good there's a chest in that area, but it's guarded by 2 elites. One of them is able to be improve sapped. The other is only 65-66 elite, but he spawns 2 additional mobs, so have a potion, or your cooldowns up.

Depending on your health when the other mob recovers, snuff him too, or vanish and recover, THEN tear him down. Loot the chest. If you can get here as a priest, simple mind control one mob, and wait for one to kill the other. Then kill the survivor! It's a tough world, sorry monsters.

Good Information About Motes

Since the introduction of motes in the World of Warcraft expansion, selling Primals (1o motes = 1 primal) in the Auction House has been a huge gold-earner. Just check the prices for these things sometime. While Primal Earth and Primal Shadow are very easy to gather and sell for between 2 and 7 gold each, Primal Water and Mana go for up to and over 20 gold EACH. Primal Fire and Air, the hardest to gather, sell for up to and over 30 gold each! Check out my Complete Primal Farming Guide . Keep a weather eye out for similar guides for Primal Life, Shadow, Earth, Air, and Mana.

By the way, don't think that having low prices on Primal Earth is a bad thing. If you're an alchemist, or know one, you can make some easy gold by simply buying Primal Earths, transmuting them to Primal Waters, and selling them at a huge profit. The cooldown for the transmute is 24 hours, and an extra 20 gold a day never hurt anyone!

Buy Small Stacks, Sell Big Stacks

I was at the Auction House today, looking at Primal Earths. They were available in stacks of 1, 2, and 20. The stacks of 20 were going for about 100 gold. On a hunch, I did some quick math, and discovered that I could make my OWN stack of 20 by buying all the smaller stacks, but it cost me 30 gold LESS to do it that way. I then turned around and undercut the other stacks of 20, and earned a 25 gold profit.

This is a good example of how the average World of Warcraft player makes mistakes, especially ones who haven't read and gold earning guides. ALWAYS be on the lookout for easy scores like this! It works with primals, enchanting items, cloth -- anything that can be stacked!

Of course, this can work in the opposite way even more effectively. Rather than rely on a stupid player paying more for a stack when they could save by buying separately, you can take advantage of the deal seakers! Just keep an eye out for big stacks of items - in order to make them sell, players tend to sell stacks of items for LESS money per item than the ones for sale individually. For example, a stack of 20 Adamantite Ore might be up for 20 gold (1 gold per ore), while individual listings will be up for 1.5 gold per. Just reverse engineer this by buying these discounted stacks, and breaking them into individual stacks to sell at a higher price!

Here's a tip for anyone who is EXALTED with Cenarion Expidition. Fedryen Swiftspear, in Zangamarsh, sells Recipe: Flask of Distilled Wisdom (+65 int, 2 hours), and it isn't BoP, YET. So, go buy a few (4g each), and put them on the AH at a hugely inflated price. Be sure to only put ONE up at a time, to keep the price low!

Use Patches to Judge Demand

When a new patch is going to come out, you can find the patch notes detailing the changes beforehand. This is a good chance to make some easy money. Look for items that are going to be changed (weakened or beefed up), or have their drop percentage decreased.

Let's say that the drop rate of Staff X is going to be decreased in the next patch. Go to the Auction House, and see if Staff X is up for sale. If it is, buy it! I don't care how high the price is. When they become rarer after the patch, that price will go up. This is especially true for Epic (purple) items. If Staff Y is Epic, and going for 500g, you can buy it, and probably sell it after the patch for 3 times that. This goes for any kind of item. Read those notes carefully!

On the other hand, if an item is going to be made more common through INCREASED drop rate, make sure you try to sell as many as you can before the patch comes out! Remember that blue weapon in your bank that you're holding on to until the price goes up? Uh-oh, it's being made more common in the next patch. Sell that thing now, even if you have to drop your price. Once more are on the market, the price will go down anyway, and probably by even more.

The Gray Gold

In World of Warcraft, "Vendor Trash" is kind of a disparaging name for something that can rake in so much gold. I'm talking about gray items - any of that junk like feathers, meat, claws, eyeballs, etc, that you have no other use for but to sell. If you think it's useless, think again!

As soon as you begin a character in WoW, deck them out with the biggest containers you can find. Why? So you aren't tempted to throw away gray items to make room for more "valuable" ones. You have to think small, here. Those gray items usually stack, and individually aren't worth squat, but when you sell a large amount of them, like you acquire ALL the time from simply questing and killing, you can make a lot of gold. Particularly valuable are gray weapons. In Outlands, these "trash" items can sell for up to 3 gold each!

Simple advice for simple gold. Don't throw anything away! SELL EVERYTHING, or you're losing out! I've yet to find a single gold-earning guide that doesn't point this out, because so many people don't understand it.

Formula: Enchant Shield - Major Stamina is a new enchanting recipe with the Burning Crusade. It can be bought for the relatively low price of 4 gold from the lovely Madame Ruby, of Shattrath City. Prices on this enchant vary per server, but you're almost guaranteed to get at least double what you paid!

Formula: Enchant Weapon - Lifestealing has been, traditionally, one of the most expensive and difficult to find patterns in the game. And with it's cool purple glow and awesome benefit to twinks, one of the most sought-after. Thankfully, you can farm for this in total peace from other players, as it drops off of Spectral Researchers in Scholomance. Don't try this until you get to high level 60s or level 70! Unfortunately, with all the awesome new enchants around, this doesn't fetch nearly the price is once did.

PPP: Deepdive Helmet

Time for another PPP, that is, Particularly Profitable Pattern installment, a guide to buying and reselling vendor items for easy gold!

If you read my post about Taking Advantage of Laziness, you know how easy it can be to earn money by selling things in the Auction House after buying them from vendors. Well, some are more profitable than others!

Schematic: Deepdive Helmet
A helmet that lets you breath underwater for however long you want. How cool is that! This would sell simply for "coolness" factor alone, but being able to breath underwater is incredible useful, especially for farming Motes of Water!

The pattern sells in Azshara. Go to Durotar, and swim up the northeast coast. Eventually, you'll see the observatory, a tiny mushroom-looking house on a ledge. Inside is Blimo Gadgetspring, who sells the schematic, and some other good patterns as well. This schematic has a quick respawn time (about 30 minutes I think) so keep a character there for a day or so to collect them, then go to the Auction House to sell them!

Honesty is Not Your Best Policy!

Here's a sneaky trick that sometimes works wonders.
The biggest risk in buying something from the Auction House is being unable to sell it again, right? So, don't buy it, I say!

Get on the Auction House and find an item being sold under value that you'd like to be able to resell. But don't buy it. Get into the /trade channel and advertise the item at the price you would sell it at. If someone makes an offer for it to you, THEN buy it from the Auction House and turn around and immediately resell it! 100% money guarantee!

This trick is hit and miss. Any smart player will check the Auction House for a better deal before paying someone directly. But if you've played WoW long enough, you know that way too many players are just not that smart!

Auctioneer Settings to Tweak

You can tweak the settings of Auctioneer with text-based commands. A complete list can be found at The Auctioneer Wiki, which is a guide to all the features of Auctioneer. I'm only going over the ones here that I feel are the best to tweak. Always remove the brackets <> when putting in the command in WoW.

/auctioneer pct-markup If you have an item you've never seen at auction before, this is how it is priced. It will take how much you could sell it to a vendor for, and mark it up by whatever is. The logic being that vendors in World of Warcraft generally buy items for 1/5 the gold that they'd sell it for. I'd set this to 300 or so. In time, with enough scans, you'll see less and less of this, and start seeing real data.

/auctioneer pct-bidmarkdown This controls the difference between the bid and buyout prices when Auctioneer prices an item for sale. Keep it between 15 and 20. That way, even if someone wins by bidding, you're not going to get ripped off, like if you set the bid very low. A key mistake many novices to World of Warcraft make in the Auction House is setting the bid low to encourage a bidding war. Unfortunately, each bid placed only barely outdoes the previous, so the result is often selling the item far under value.

/auctioneer pct-nocomp This controls how much ABOVE market value Auctioneer will set an item if there is no competition. It makes market sense - if there's no competition, supply is probably low, and prices can go up. Don't be shy here. Ratchet up the price, if the item is in demand. See, then you set the market. Even if someone underbids you, chances are they'll only do it a by a bit, because they want to secure a profit for themselves. Rarely will you get an honest player who will know your 100 gold blue is only worth 20 gold, and underbid you by 80g. It's in everyone's best interest to sell their item for as much as they can! Take advantage of human greed.

/auctioneer pct-underlow This controls how much you undercut someone by when Auctioneer does your pricing. The default is 5, but you can go down to 2 or 3. It's a negligible profit gain, but a buyer is going to go for the lowest-priced item, even if it is only a couple silver lower!

/auctioneer pct-maxless This is a handy one. It controls how low Auctioneer is willing to go to undercut someone before giving up because you'll lose too much gold. I wouldn't go below 70%, here. If someone wants to lose hard earned (or ill-gained!) gold by selling an item at only 70% of its worth, let them lose money.

So tweak your settings people! Only amateur install and go. YOU will actually understand Auctioneer, and soon you'll be sharking those other Auctioneer users as well!

Auctioneer Interface In Depth

Auctioneer is very user friendly, even to a World of Warcraft novice, but some explanation is always nice to have! Without further ado!

1.) Your Scan button. The most important tool in Auctioneer! It scans the WoW's Auction House and saves all pricing information in a nifty database.

2.) Search Auctions. Let's you filter through the data Auctioneer gathered, based on bid price, buyout price, profit margin, etc. In depth information further down in this post.

3.) Post Auctions. The tab that brings you to the area where you can post your own Auctions.

4.) Btmscan. Bottom Scanner, very a handy tool. More information further down in the post.

5.) Transactions. This keeps track of what you've bought and how much gold paid. It's a handy way to gauge how much gold you've earned (or, unfortunately, lost!)

1.) Search. This dropdown lets you search according to Bids, Buyouts, search the competition, search for particular items (nice for monopolizing purposes), and search according to seller. Set the Minimum Profit to whatever you'd like, and Auctioneer will only return profits of that amount or greater. I generally set mine to 1 or 1.5 gold.

2.) Min PCT Less. "PCT" stands for percent, and means "percent discount from highest sellable price". So an item listed with 80pct is going for 80% cheaper than what you can get for it on the Auction House, and so is 80% profit. I keep this at 30, because I like to see all my auctions, even the low profit ones. Sorting by PCT is a good way to search out good deals. The highest PCT auctions are usually bids set to 1 silver, with the seller wanting a bidding war to occur. Look for 100PCT items with a "short" time left and bid, and if you win you're making 100% profit!

3.) Minimum Bid Percent. This one is kind of confusing. It filters based on how many times you've seen an item at auction, and it has been bid on. So, if you set it for "1%", it will return any scanned auctions that have only been bid on 1% of the time, and so are very poor sellers. Setting it to, say, 80% will return only auctions that have been bid on 80% or more of the times they've been posted. I recommend leaving this at zero and judging the sale-worthiness on an item-specific scale. After all, many epic items, expensive items and new items in World of Warcraft will have been bid on very few times!

4.) Maximum Time Left. Just what it sounds like. It only returns auctions with the amount of time you set or less. I like to set mine for "very long" to return all auctions, then just sort the list according to time left (click the time left column in the main window) to organize into order of short, medium, long, very long.

5.) Item specifics. Here can you specify what KIND of item to search for (category restrictions), minimum quality (search only grays, greens, blues, purples, artifact, whatever), and search for a particular item, in the last window at the bottom.

I feel that the post auctions tab requires little explanation, so I will keep it brief. Starting price is the price the auction begins at, what the first bid will cost. Buyout price is how much someone can pay to buy it immediately. You can set the auction to 2, 8, or 24 hours in length before having it expire if no one bids on it. You can find some tips on selling in my Selling With Auctioneer post.

1.) Bottom Scanner is easy to use. Just hit "Play" and review the auctions it alerts you to. It searches the auction house every 20 seconds for the last 50 auctions posted and looks for undervalued items. Go here for more information about it.

And lastly, the transactions tab. I'm not going to put a screenshot up, because you won't need one. It simply logs the date of your transactions, if it was a buy or sell, what the item was, what you made/lost, and who bought it or sold it to you!

Take Advantage of Laziness

If you think about it, the driving force behind any economy is LAZINESS. People don't want to take the time (or can't, in most cases) to do themselves what they can pay others to do. We don't cut down trees and make our beds, we buy them. We don't forge our cooking knives, we buy them.

The same holds true to World of Warcraft. An non-mining character won't drop their professions and respec to mining in order to get ore. They'll let someone else do it, and buy it from them. This is, of course, what makes the Auction House so darn useful. It's "conservation of labor" if you will: The same amount of work gets done (the mining of the minerals), it's just shifted to someone else. (Kind of like the law of conservation of energy, I know!)

But it doesn't stop there. It's possible to capitalize on that laziness without even putting in any significant effort. In this case, it's taking advantage of a combination of laziness and ignorance. Hey, you gotta do what you gotta.

There are tons of vendors throughout the world who sell limited quantity items. You can tell by the little number in the corner of the box displaying the picture - that means there are only "x" of them left available. Usually, there are only 1 or 2, and when they're gone, they're gone until the vendor restocks them. So what do we have?

Items that aren't in high supply.
Items that many people don't even know come from vendors.
Items you can buy for a very small amount, and sell for very good profit on the Auction House.

Since most players won't be willing to go around and search for these limited-quantity items, they'll instead buy them when they pop up on the Auction House!

Small Pets
At one time, the pets that came from vendors were in vogue. When WoW was shiny and new, everyone had them, and there was money to be made by buying them from vendors and reselling them in the Auction House. Now, most WoW players are too hardened to care about these useless pets. Not much profit to be made here anymore. However, if you should happen to find a Whelpling (Dark, Emerald, or Crimson), you can sell them for up to 100 gold. Be warned, they have a low drop rate. In my opinion, they too inconsistent to be worth farming.

Profession Recipes, Patterns, and Schematics
That leaves us with crafting patterns, cooking recipes, and various green items. Almost all characters have a crafting recipe of some sort and cooking. That means that any recipes or patterns will be appealing to a very broad audience. The best part is, unless someone knows these come from a vendor, odds are they've never seen a lot of them, which will increase the odds that they'll buy, because they'll assume it's hard to get! If you click the links, they will send you to the corresponding thottbot page, where you can see the name and zone for the vendor selling the item.

Cooking Recipes
Cooking recipes sell very well on the Auction House. Because everyone can learn cooking, it's very useful, and just plain fun, recipes tend to be in high demand, especially ones essential to continue to raise your skill.

Understanding the Auction House

The World of Warcraft Auction House is kind of like an entire game within the game. It's a system that is simple on the surface, but wonderfully complex with a little digging. Here are some tips to keep in mind when using the Auction House, to maximize gold earned.

Buy on the weekends, sell on the weekends. Weekends are the biggest time to play for most people. That means more people on the Auction House. Weekends are also the most common time to raid hard instances, so if you're trying to sell something needed for the instance (protection potions, for example), the weekends is the most likely time for them to get snatched up!

If you're saving money, you don't need to buy from the Auction House. You can keep yourself relatively well geared through quests alone, with a few purchases here and there. Be frugal! Those little bits add up.

Always set the auction to 24 hours. Anything shorter will only lower your deposit by a few silver, but will cut the time people have to buy it dramatically.

Always post a buyout that is slightly above your minimum bid, and slightly below the competition (Auctioneer can do this for you, and much more!). 90% of people on the Auction House will take a reasonable buyout, rather than bid and risk losing. Wouldn't you? Setting a good buyout will move your items more quickly.

Don't be a wimp. If you see an item up for 100 gold, but you know you could probably wait and sell it for 200g, don't be afraid to buy it. It might not move quickly, but it will eventually sell. It just takes patience (and knowing the market!).

Don't rely solely on Auctioneer. I'm looking at the AH right now, and there are 20 listings for Savory Deviate Delight. Auctioneer is listing the profit at 10g+ for each one. But I know that can't be right, because that means EVERYONE selling them is putting them undervalue. What it means is that the market is flooded with them, and prices are down. Learn to spot situations like this and skip them for now.

Study the market. Know what is selling quickly. Know what will probably never sell. Use your own experiences to judge what is worth money and what isn't. If you'd buy it, others probably would too.
